Team USA could be in trouble in 2028 Olympics and Spurs could be in middle of it
We know. It's too quiet on the basketball front. Now in the dog days of the offseason, there is little news to be found about the San Antonio Spurs and fans want more. Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done until training camp approaches, but that doesn't happen until the beginning of October. Until then, we'll do our best to examine the team and the possibilities while bringing relevant content to the readers whenever possible.
To that effect, retired NBA veteran CJ Miles had something to say about Victor Wembanyama recently that Spurs fans will want to hear because, of course, you want to hear about more players—current or former—gassing up the young star.
Wembanyama has a great chance at a gold medal in 2028
Everyone saw how close France came to toppling Team USA in the Paris Olympics. While they won't have their nation to galvanize them in 2028, they'll have Victor nearing the peak of his powers. He'll be 24 by then, and the knowledge he'll have soaked up, paired with the additions he'll undoubtedly make to his game, will give him comic-book villain-level powers.
France has also been producing high-quality players and they'll all take several leaps forward, giving Wemby formidable teammates by his side. Guys like Bilal Coulibaly, Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr and others will be ready to carve their names in the Olympic history books by then.
The under-discussed part of this conversation is who might be on Team USA at that time. LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry are all older, opening up room for more players to get on the team. The NBA is not lacking for American-born stars who can suit up, but there's a case to be made for another San Antonio Spur to join the fray: Devin Vassell.
People keep forgetting about him, so it's our job to remind them. Vassell is only 23 years old and averaged 20 points per game. He has improved his field goal percentage every year and shot 37% from three last season, but from the corner, that number elevated to 49%. One of the best in the league.
This is a player who knows how to play his role but can step up and get buckets over the toughest defenses, and he's just getting started. Four years from now, there's a strong chance Vassell will be a star player, deserving strong consideration for the Olympic team, and if that happens, Spurs fans could very well end up watching Vassell vs. Wembanyama for the gold medal in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That would be special.
