Take out the key to your memories and unlock the door so you can access the details of a report that came out a very long... just a couple of months ago. To set the stage, San Antonio owns a Chicago Bulls top-10 protected first-round pick in the 2025 draft, so if the Bulls win enough games, the pick is virtually guaranteed to convey to the Spurs. It's a deep draft, so they shouldn't want that.

However, when they reportedly had a chance to move Alex Caruso for several picks, including a first-rounder, they declined due to a mandate to win as many games as possible next season. But then they traded DeMar DeRozan away without getting much in return other than cap space. That's a smart move for a money-strapped team that doesn't plan to contend, so that's not too crazy.

They then traded Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey. The move was scrutinized because if they wanted a reset, they should have traded Caruso for picks sooner. These moves make you speculate the organization has reversed course on their plan to win as many games as possible—you would be wrong.

Spurs fans should view the Bulls as a secondary team to root for

This is an awesome development for San Antonio. How many games the Bulls will end up winning is uncertain, but what's generally accepted as common knowledge is that several teams will be tanking for a shot at Cooper Flagg. Chicago, seemingly, has no interest in that, and that's the best thing for the Spurs.

SA has a potential four first-round draft picks depending on whether the Bulls and Hornets' picks convey (Charlotte's pick is top-14 protected). Chicago's decision to win as many games as possible makes that pick more valuable as a trade asset if the Spurs decide they want to move it.

There are only so many roster spots, and if, by chance, all four picks land in their lap, it's unlikely they'd want to draft four rookies to the roster. There's a better chance that some package is formed to bring in more proven talent once the front office has a better idea of what the team needs at that point.

Josh Giddey had a terrible season last year, but he looked much better in the Olympics. If Lonzo Ball can come back healthy and contribute at a high level, they may have a chance to win enough games to benefit the future of the Spurs. That's an outcome worth rooting for.
