5. Memphis Grizzlies choose Ja'Kobe Walter

Walter gets buckets. The 19-year-old averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 0.8 steals in 29.3 minutes per game through his first four. He is shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from 3-point range, despite taking a lot of tough shots. Walter is Baylor’s leading scorer, but must find ways to get easier looks.

The 6’5 wing can shoot and defend. His team has an incredible 39.0 net rating with him on the floor through four games, including an impressive win over Auburn where Walter dropped 28 points on seven of 13 shooting from the field. Every NBA team is searching for a wing that can score 15 every night, sink open shots, and defend multiple positions. Walter checks all of those boxes.

There are significant questions about his playmaking ability. Walter produced one assist and six turnovers in his first four college games. The teenager is strictly a scorer at this stage but must improve his passing if he wants to solidify himself in the top five.

The Memphis Grizzlies desperately need desperately need shooting and perimeter defense. It is why they traded for Marcus Smart. Walter is a fantastic fit, and the Grizzlies have had success developing talent. Expect the Baylor freshman to keep improving throughout the season, and there will be more room to grow once he arrives in the NBA.
