After the San Antonio Spurs slid in the standings, it's clear that they need a big trade to help save their season. Fortunately, the perfect trade target for the Spurs is out there and available. Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson is having a breakout season, averaging 19.4 points while shooting 41.9% from three.
Johnson is one of the best shooters in the NBA, particularly for his size at 6'8, with him being a career
39.6% 3-point shooter on high volume. He isn't just a spot-up shooter either; he can hit pull-up threes in transition, forcing teams to account for him in the fast break. Johnson is a lethal shooter, running off screens and using handoffs to get open for threes.
The Spurs don't have that level of shooter on this year's team, and that has been a big problem with them struggling to consistently space the floor. Most of the team's best shooters are in the starting lineup, but the second unit features a collection of non-shooters that is less than the sum of their parts.
That means that the Spurs should strongly consider a trade to add more shooting, and Johnson seems like the right player to target.
What could a Spurs trade for Cam Johnson look like?
With the Nets wanting at least two first-round picks for Johnson, the Spurs may have to offer a lot, but for them, that's not quite that much. Keldon Johnson, the Chicago Bulls' 2025 top-10 protected first, and the Charlotte Hornets' 2025 top-14 protected first for Johnson could be a reasonable trade for both sides.
That would give the Nets a possible lottery pick, as well as potentially two high second-round picks in 2026 and 2027, assuming that the Hornets' selection doesn't convey and converts into second-rounders.
Or, perhaps the Spurs could get more bang for their buck by swapping out Keldon Johnson and putting Zach Collins in his place. However, that might mean that San Antonio has to swap out Charlotte's second and replace it with their 2025 first or Atlanta's first.
A projected rotation of Chris Paul, Devin Vassell, Cam Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, and Wembanyama would have plenty of shooting and give the second unit more offense, too. Tre Jones, Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, and Charles Bassey would have more spacing than it does at the moment.
With the Spurs needing more offense, particularly shooting, Johnson makes plenty of sense for the team. It will cost San Antonio, but the results could pay off in a big way with him potentially helping them make the playoffs this season.
