The San Antonio Spurs have the brightest young star in the NBA but must put the right pieces around Victor Wembanyama to contend. They upgraded by adding Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, but things have not gone to plan. The Spurs have struggled with CP3 on the floor and are waiting for Devin Vassell to get healthy. San Antonio is 1-2 with a persistent problem on full display.

The NBA places a massive emphasis on shooting threes, and the Spurs have lost the math game in every contest thus far. Their ten 3-pointers made per game is tied for 23rd in the league, and San Antonio sits 21st in 3-point percentage over the small sample.

The Spurs only correct this problem with an upgrade. The fanbase has discussed acquiring Cameron Johnson as the Nets enter a rebuild. Expect the veteran to be available before the deadline, but the Spurs must pay to acquire him.

Spurs could change fortunes by trading Keldon Johnson for Cameron Johnson

Brooklyn has reportedly set a massive asking price for the 6’8 forward, but the Spurs know Sean Marks well. He spent two years as a player in San Antonio and returned after retiring to be an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich before becoming the Nets general manager.

There is certainly a deal to be made that suits both sides. The Spurs must trade a forward to open up playing time for Cam Johnson. They also have the perfect draft pick to make it look like the Nets got a much larger haul than they did.

Cameron Johnson to Spurs

The Hornets' first-rounder in 2025 is top-14 protected and turns into two second-rounders if not conveyed in the upcoming draft. It looks like Brooklyn got two firsts for Johnson, but they may end up with four seconds and Keldon Johnson. The Spurs would lottery protect their 2027 selection, but it may quickly convey as San Antonio should be back in the playoffs in two years.

Cam Johnson gives the Spurs more size and shooting. He is 6’8 and a career 39.0 percent 3-point shooter. Teams have to guard him on the perimeter, which opens up more space for the Spurs to attack. They would have two shooters with gravity flanking Wemby when Devin Vassell returns. That should solve San Antonio’s woes and could quickly make them an elite offense with Chris Paul running the show.

The San Antonio Spurs have been in the bottom five in 3-point percentage since 2023. The problem will only be fixed by acquiring an upgrade. Cameron Johnson is available and could be in the Alamo immediately. All San Antonio must do is make the call and find a trade that works for both sides.
