After years of speculation, the NBA will soon a significant step towards expansion. Aside from facing two new teams every year, it will seemingly be business as usual for the San Antonio Spurs, right?

Not exactly. With two new teams, that likely means there will be an expansion draft in which the Spurs could protect only eight players.

That may force San Antonio to make some surprising roster decisions. However, equally as important is the fact that a Western Conference team will have to join the East.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, either the Minnesota Timberwolves or Memphis Grizzlies would likely head to the Eastern Conference. Spurs fans should be hoping for the former.

The Spurs' path to a dynasty may soon get much easier

The Timberwolves have made the Western Conference Finals back-to-back seasons. Not just that, but they also have one of the best young players in the NBA in Anthony Edwards.

As a result, the Wolves are well positioned to contend for the next half-decade. Thus, San Antonio should want no part of them, with them already having a heated rivalry with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The NBA may have made a Spurs dynasty inevitable

It wasn't that long ago that the Grizzlies were the toast of the NBA. Now they may miss the playoffs for a third straight season. With them likely headed for a rebuild, they shouldn't be on San Antonio's radar.

On the other hand, the Timberwolves definitely should be. They are currently sixth in the West standings, but they have played, given San Antonio problems this season.

In fact, the Wolves and the Phoenix Suns are the only teams in the top eight in the Western Conference playoff race to have a winning record against the Silver and Black this season.

Moving them to the East and replacing them with an expansion team could mean a few more wins a season in the near future. It could also mean an easier path through the playoffs for the Spurs. Let's hope that's the case.
