If you have been tuned into social media, at all, over the past 24 hours, you've seen the rumors swirling around De'Aaron Fox and San Antonio. Fox declined a contract extension and recently went on the Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis and explained his reasons. He wants to win, and he wants to know that Sacramento has a plan to make that happen.

Right now, that's not happening, and we speculated that would be the case due to Sac's mismatched roster, leading to a theory the Spurs' could pry the talented point guard from the Kings' clutches. Now that our theory has evolved into a rumor with legs, the NBA world is talking. The more they talk, the more this feels like a real possibility.

Kens5 beat writer Jeff Garcia brought up an important nugget that makes Fox to San Antonio sound more feasible. The Kentucky Wildcats star graduated from high school in Texas, and he has a real affinity for a Spurs legend.

Fox's Texas connection could make San Antonio a preferred destination

Fox went to high school in Katy, Texas—northwest of Houston. When he was in school, the most dominant team in the state was also one of the most dominant teams in the league—the San Antonio Spurs. During that time, he watched a ton of Manu Ginobili, and at an all-star game media day in 2019, he revealed that detail.

"Manu is great. I grew up in Texas, and the Spurs went to the playoffs every single year since I was born," Fox said. It's half a decade since the Silver and Black last saw the postseason, but that could change this year.

San Antonio is ahead of schedule if you use preseason win projections as a barometer for their progress. Most predictions had them down for about 35 wins, but their own pace to blow by that number. Their improvement could be an additional motivating factor for players ready for a change in atmosphere.

Victor Wembanyama has already begun turning heads toward Alamo City. There have been several players who have either openly or reportedly expressed interest in playing alongside the Alien. From Trae Young last season to Rob Dillingham and even the number one high school prospect in the nation, AJ Dybantsa, guys want to play with Wemby.

On top of the pull of San Antonio's superstar, it's always easier to recruit players when they have a positive connection to the city or the team. The Kings will likely try everything they can to retain their best player, but Fox becomes their biggest trade asset if they don't turn their season around. Fortunately, the Spurs have plenty to send Sacramento if they seriously put him on the trade block.

By the way, if you're wondering why Fox was talking about San Antonio at a February exhibition game, it's because the Spurs had media members in attendance. 2019 was the last time the Silver and Black had an all-star representative. LaMarcus Aldridge received the honor that season.
