Sounds like Sochan is ready to move on.

After three and a half seasons, the Jeremy Sochan era may be coming to an end. According to veteran NBA insider Marc Stein, "League sources say that Jeremy Sochan and his representation have received permission from the Spurs to explore the landscape for a potential new home via trade."

It's the first real sign we've heard that San Antonio is willing to move the Polish power forward, but it's certainly not a surprise. Once the number nine overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Sochan hasn't been able to reach an offensive level consistent enough to warrant a rotation spot.

His dismissal would make him the second lottery pick not to pan out, and they've had at least one selection in each of the last six years.

Sochan deserves a shot to play

It's a disappointment considering what the staff invested in him, but there's another perspective to this situation that warrants consideration. The former Baylor Bear may have a different side to the story, and though there hasn't been any statement from the fourth-year role player other than a mysterious post with only one word: "patience." Based on this new report, perhaps that was enough.

One might say that the Silver and Black stunted his growth by forcing him to play out of position far too often. He entered the league as a defensive wing and slasher who could play well around the rim. It's not his fault the offense changed with the addition of Victor Wembanyama, and suddenly, he needed to become an elite shooter overnight.

In the meantime, they didn't give Sochan much time to do that, playing him at the point guard position for a stretch—a role he struggled with. At the time, it seemed to really hurt his confidence, but he trudged his way through the experiment with a smile on his face. It didn't end until they had played nearly a fourth of the games in his sophomore season.

Unfortunately, just when he should have been able to get back to his position, the Spurs were finding out just how terrible Zach Collins was, so the colorfully haired instigator was forced to play small-ball center to supplement some of Wemby's time on the bench and to play alongside the Alien because he didn't always want to play the 5.

He's sacrificed every which way, doing whatever is asked of him without complaining. The Polish Prince still has a ton of value in this league. He's still one of the most ferocious perimeter defenders in the NBA. He just needs someone to get him into the right system and believe in him.
