If you have been following the Spurs for a while, you likely have a strong affinity towards Jeremy Sochan. The 9th overall pick in 2022 has stuck with the Silver and Black through the dark times of rebuilding and stood out as one of the most likable players on the team.
The test dummy for San Antonio's transformation has been through the wringer. Whether he was tasked with taking on lead ball handler duties or slotting in as the team's pseudo center, Sochan has done it all for this team. He has given San Antonio his heart and deserves every ounce of respect from Spurs fans. But, sadly, his time in the Alamo City may be coming to a close.
Jeremy Sochan's fatal flaw has led to his demise
While Sochan was one of the most instrumental members of the Spurs rebuild and once seen as a cornerstone piece, his value has taken a massive tumble for one obvious reason.
The Baylor alum has all of the tools to be a treasured member of the Spurs rotation. With his lengthy 6'8" frame, the athletic wing can guard a multitude of positions and create plays on the defensive side of the ball. For a Spurs team that values defense, these players are essential. However, in today's NBA, nearly every role player must be able to shoot threes. Sochan can not do that.
Although the forward has shown promise as a cutter and transition scorer, it is simply not enough to keep him on the floor. Sochan hasn't shot above 31% from deep in any of his four seasons and is shooting a weak 29% this season. The Spurs coaching staff has begged him to improve, but it simply hasn't happened. As a result, the 22-year-old will likely be traded at this year's deadline.
The failure of the Sochan experiment is devasting
I don't think there is a singular Spurs fan out there who genuinely wants to see Sochan go; it is simply a necessity. Unfortunately, without a jump shot, the youngster can no longer fit on this championship-ready squad. There is no more room for development; San Antonio is looking to win now.
Whether it is his hilarious post-game interviews, colorful hair, or bingeable social media content, Sochan is widely loved. Even more devastating, Spurs fans were ready to see their lottery pick blossom into a star. Coming out of the draft, this was a player many believed could be a hallmark of the San Antonio brand and a core member of the squad that would eventually be built.
We will all still be rooting for you, Jeremy. No matter where he goes, hopefully to a place that can properly develop him, Spurs Nation will be on his side.
