The San Antonio Spurs shocked the masses by not moving Jeremy Sochan ahead of the 2026 NBA trade deadline. If a recent report from a respected Spurs insider proves true, then Sochan has now delivered eye-opening news of his own.
Despite his questionable fit with San Antonio's revamped core, Sochan will not be pursuing a buyout and will instead finish his rookie contract with the Spurs.
Sochan spent the first three seasons of his NBA career earning praise and criticism in relatively equal doses from outside viewers. Many Spurs fans rushed to his defense, however, citing his unique versatility and ability to truly defend every position on the court. Unfortunately, he's yet to find his place in the rotation during year four and has thus become a buyout candidate.
According to Jared Weiss of The Athletic, Sochan at least intends to finish out the 2025-26 season with the Spurs before exploring what the future may hold over the summer.
"Sochan does not intend to negotiate a buyout with the Spurs and plans to finish the season in San Antonio, according to a league source."
For those hoping to see Sochan rediscover his form and contribute to the Spurs now that they're in the postseason picture, hope has been restored.
Jeremy Sochan doesn't plan to pursue a buyout with the Spurs
No hyperbole is necessary when stating that Sochan has become the most polarizing player in San Antonio. His versatility knows no limits on his best days, but the lows have become as much of a talking point as the highs during the Spurs' rise to contention.
At 35-16, San Antonio is simply too close to competing for a championship for some to become comfortable with the idea that Sochan's imperfect fit is worth further exploring.
That stance has become more rigid as the season has progressed. Sochan has missed 24 games in 2025-26, and during the 27 that he's played, he's averaged a mere 13.1 minutes per contest. It doesn't take much of a leap of faith to believe his 25.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc has played a role.
On a team that already has two high-volume players shooting below 30 percent from three in Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, there simply isn't much room for another.
Jeremy Sochan is undeniably talented, but does he still fit with Spurs?
For as fair as the concerns may be, Sochan is still just 22 years of age. Though he struggles as a shooter, his game has progressed well in multiple other phases. He's an efficient finisher inside, a skilled passer, a top-tier offensive rebounder for his position, and a remarkably versatile defender.
In 2024-25, Sochan ranked in the 99th percentile in defensive positional versatility, per Basketball Index, as well as the 96th percentile in perimeter isolation defense and the 84th percentile in screener mobile defense.
That's inevitably left many Spurs fans to feel as though it's too soon to give up on his dynamic value. Sochan's poor shooting is an unfortunately poor fit, but he brings so much else to the table that it's hard to believe he can't contribute winning minutes.
Thankfully, Sochan appears to be staying with the Spurs at least until the offseason, when he'll become a restricted free agent.
