The NBA has finally done right by the Spurs and put another star from the second seed in the Western Conference in the All-Star Games this Sunday. De'Aaron Fox gets the nod, making him a 2x All-Star. Swipa spent eight years in Sacramento and only received this honor once. In his first full year in San Antonio, that wrong gets corrected.
San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox has been named by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to replace injured Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2026 NBA All-Star Game (Sunday, 2/15, 5pm/et, NBC & Peacock). I don't know if Mitch Johnson's soliloquy had anything to do with this announcement being made, but if it did, good job, Coach.
De'Aaron Fox has been an All-Star talent for years
The 10-year vet with Flash-like speed has been tearing up the league for a long time. It's not his fault he was trapped in the Upside Down of NBA organizations. The former Kings franchise star is averaging 19.4 points, 6.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game this season.
By all accounts, his numbers are actually down from what we're used to seeing from Fox, which reinforces the idea that winning is valued in this league. Putting up a bunch of numbers on a bad team doesn't get you recognized as much as moderate production on a winner.
Before joining the Silver and Black, he was putting up 25-26 points, 6 assists, and almost 2 steals per game. He's always deserved this honor, so it's beautiful to see him get acknowledged in his very first season in Alamo City.
I do wonder how close of a decision this was between Fox and Stephon Castle. The reigning Rookie of the Year had picked things up as of late, until these last two games. If he had built on that 40-point explosion, would he have gotten the call instead? Who knows?
I bring it up, not as a slight to Swipa because he's very deserving of this, but to highlight how talented the players on this roster are. Picking either player is a win for all of Spurs Nation. And now, Victor Wembanyama will have a friendly face on the court. Although they'll be on opposing teams, and we all know how competitive Wemby is.
Not only does he want to win the games, but he also has a goal to bring back the fire of competition to the event. That means he'll be coming for blood, and Fox is going to be on the other end of that. But the Spurs' veteran floor general is there for a reason, and he'll have something to say. Now, that should be fun to watch.
