Have you ever wished the 7'2" alien Victor Wembanyama could play alongside another big man? If that's the case, I have the perfect prospect for you. Standing at 6'10", Georgia's very own Asa Newell is ready to conquer the NBA.
The blossoming youngster hails from the prolific Montverde Academy alongside Cooper Flagg and other prestigious alumni. All it took was just one year in college for the former Bulldog to wow scouts and etch his name at the top of draft boards. Newell averaged 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, one steal, and one block per game in his lone season at Georgia.
The Georgia big man has untapped scoring potential
It's hard to miss the athletic freak whenever he is on the court. Newell is a one-man wrecking crew on offense and has built an exciting resume of offensive highlights. While he was excellent at the college stage in 2025, he will have another level to tap into once he reaches the NBA.
The most jaw-dropping aspect of his game is his play-finishing ability. With a thundering force, Newell knows how to slam it down. He opens up these opportunities by receiving the pass off a cut, bullying his defender in the post, or running like a train off the tracks in transition.
With a collection of playmakers in San Antonio, Newell will have plenty of chances to make magic happen. He excels in the pick-and-roll, quickly driving to the rim off the screen. Newell also thrives in the pick-and-pop, able to stand his ground and pull up for a quick jumper. Whether it be De'Aaron Fox or Dylan Harper setting the table, the nimble big man will find his way to the hoop for an easy basket.
His Silver and Black teammates will love him for the immense number of second-chance opportunities he creates. With his size, Newell is a terror around the rim and can get up for an offensive rebound and finish the play. Averaging 3.3 offensive boards per game, Newell would become a key cog on a feared offensive rebounding squad alongside other bouncy players in San Antonio.
When he isn't throwing it down, Newell has displayed craftiness around the rim. He has a slick touch next to the basket and a variety of ways to get the ball in the hoop. He isn't just a paint scorer either. Newell can step into the mid-range for a turnaround jumper and splash it.
Extending further out, Newell has shown a willingness to take threes. Although inefficient, he has the mechanics to be a reliable three-point shooter. The 19-year-old is not quite there yet with his long-range shot, but with the dedication of head coach Mitch Johnson, he can reach a frightening potential.
Newell is an intimidating defender
The Spurs already have an elite rim defender in Wembanyama, but why not add another? Newell is just that; he showed this by pressuring opponents all year long. With his length and athleticism, Newell is a tricky defender to get by.
At 6'10", the big man is highly coordinated and fluid for his size. It is rare to see someone so big move effortlessly across the floor. This skill is particularly important on defense. The rangy defender can cover the entire half-court and defend a multitude of offensive skill sets. He can get into passing lanes and pick off passes with his 6'11" wingspan.
Newell's most electric trait on defense is his capabilities as a shot blocker. He can quickly adjust and deflect the ball before it gets any closer to the rim. With his towering size, Newell is a brick wall to get by, and if the defender still chooses to attack, he can quickly swat it down. When he is beaten off the dribble, he can recover quickly and get back to the ball for a block.
With Newell manning the inside, Wembanyama would act more as a roamer. The duo would be ferocious together and an impossible pairing to score on. Opposing teams would struggle to do anything when these two suit up on the floor alongside each other.
The former Bulldog will look great in a Spurs uniform
With play finishing and defensive strengths, Newell would fit like a glove in San Antonio. He will play well off of the guards on offense, cleaning up and doing the dirty work while forming a scary defensive pairing with Wembanyama on defense.
A raw prospect, Mitch Johnson would have the pleasure of crafting Newell into the perfect player to fit the team in the long run. Still developing his shot, if he can reach his shooting potential, he would be a dangerous weapon for the already-stacked Spurs.
There is so much to love about Newell and how his NBA-ready game can translate into the big leagues. Needing a backup big and another interior threat, Newell makes perfect sense for the Spurs to snag if he is available at pick 14.
