With the San Antonio Spurs having three picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, they have a chance to solve some of their roster flaws. The Spurs will select second, 14th, and 38th overall. While they already seemingly have a player in mind with the second pick, who they will choose with their other two selections is much more up in the air.
Assuming the Spurs don't make a big trade this summer, they will still have many of the same issues that plagued them last season. However, they could target two player types to unlock their roster's full potential.
The perfect player types the Spurs should target in the draft
First and foremost, the Spurs need more shooting, with their roster having plenty of questionable shooters. They can't afford to add another shaky shooter to the mix, and whoever they take should at least have some shooting ability or potential in that area. Before, when they were expected to have the eighth pick, they were projected to select one of the two sharpshooters available in the top 10.
Now that they have the second pick, they likely won't take either of those players. Fortunately, they have the 14th and 38th picks and must add more shooting. They already have plenty of depth at guard with De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and the presumptive second pick.
As a result, they should focus more on a floor-spacing wing. There are a few players projected to be selected in the second half of the first round that could fill that role and could soon have a path to minutes.
The Spurs must take a floor-spacing forward and a center
The Spurs also have a big need at center, and there are several options that are projected to go in the back half of the lottery and early in the second. Considering how awful the Spurs were with Victor Wembanyama off the court, they should strongly think about taking a big man.
One who can protect the basket, rebound, and guard away from the basket. That seems like a lot to ask, but there are actually at least three players that fit the bill who could be available at 14, and perhaps another if things break right in the second round.
All in all, the Spurs have three picks in this year's draft and should use that to draft a shooting wing, preferably one who is at least passable on defense, and a versatile center. If they can draft those two player types, then that could go a long way towards them building out a more balanced roster.
