Now that the Giannis Antetokounmpo Sweepstakes is back up and running, the trade machines have kicked back into high gear. The Spurs haven't been exempt from participation in these cycles since Victor Wembanyama's arrival. It's our new reality. With that said, Bleacher Report had an idea for Brian Wright to get the Greek Freak to the Alamo City, and we're going to discuss it.
While I was preparing to write this piece, Fox Sports host Nick Wright shared a few trade ideas of his own, and he, too, brought up the Silver and Black in one of them. I figured I'd just roll them both into one piece where I can judge which one I'd prefer, if I like either at all. So, let's dive in.
The Spurs could be aggressive now and preserve the future
Nick Wright's deal
Milwaukee receives: Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, '26 1st (CHI), '27 1st (ATL), '28 1st (BOS), '30 1st (DAL), '31 1st (SAC)
San Antonio receives: Giannis Antetokounmpo
Now, the first thing you may notice is that Nick Wright's deal is slightly off.
Those of you who are locked into San Antonio's asset treasure chest realize that some of them were depleted in the trade with Chicago and Sacramento that brought De'Aaron Fox to this team. That Chicago pick was for last summer, and it's gone. They have the right to swap picks with Atlanta this offseason, but that's it.
The Boston, Dallas, and Sacramento picks are also swaps, but you can trade your right to swap picks to another team and keep your own, so there's still merit to the proposal overall. And if this is all you had to give up for Giannis, it's a no-brainer.
Harrison Barnes is on an expiring deal, and he hasn't really played well all season. Being able to use him as a trade piece to bring in one of the greatest players this game has ever seen would be an obvious decision to make, and while we'd miss Devin Vassell, we're talking about Giannis here.
San Antonio could keep their young core intact while holding onto all of their upcoming draft picks and adding a first-ballot Hall of Famer still in his prime. Honestly, the Bucks may want another player, but as constructed, this is a fantastic deal for the Silver and Black, and Wright would be crazy not to say yes.
Grade: A-
San Antonio would compromise their future in this deal
Bleacher Report's deal
Milwaukee gets: Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Dylan Harper, a 2030 first-round pick and a 2032 first-round pick
San Antonio gets: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Thanasis Antetokounmpo
I don't like this deal at all, and I'll be quick on this one because my reasons are simple. I don't want to give up that many of the team's younger rotational pieces, and I'm still not willing to part with Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle. I know both players are struggling to knock down shots, and Castle, especially, is in the middle of his sophomore slump, but those are normal growing pains.
I still believe that both players have immense potential, and if they reach it, the Spurs will have a strong core for the next 10+ years. But you have to let those guys grow together. Giannis wasn't Giannis during the first few seasons of his career, and the Slash Bros aren't anywhere near finished products either. Give them time.
Also, I want nothing to do with having to hold a roster spot for Thanasis. I don't know, man. I'm not into the whole babysitting thing. If he doesn't really stand a chance of actually contributing to the games, he doesn't need to be on the team. I'd say no to this offer if Brian Wright asked me.
