Last summer, De'Aaron Fox declined to sign an extension with the Sacramento Kings, and it was for a couple of reasons. One was because of his skepticism in the direction of the franchise, and the other was the eligibility for a higher payday, and things couldn't have worked out better for one of the most clutch players in the league.

He got himself away from an unreliable organization with a bad track record for team management and joined one of the most prestigious organizations in the four major American sports. Now that the offseason has arrived, the San Antonio Spurs can get to work on securing their relationship for the foreseeable future. Fox made it clear that he wants it, and the timing is right.

Fox is entering the last year of his deal

There's no need to drag this out, and there's no reason to believe the Spurs would do so. The perfect point guard to pair alongside Victor Wembanyama fell into their laps, and they didn't even need to give up a lot to get him. Now is the time to pay the toll required when you have a star player on your team.

In March, the NBA informed teams that the salary cap is increasing by 10% to $154.6 million for the 2025-26 season. A $229 million extension would pay Fox over $50 million per year, putting max deal number one on their books. It's been years since San Antonio handed out a deal like this, but it's also been years since they've had a player of Fox's caliber on the roster.

They'll happily pay the cost to rid themselves of early-season exits. Signing Fox to a four-year extension would secure him through the 2029-30 season. He'd be 33 years old at that point, and with the way players are extending their careers these days, he'd still have a lot of great basketball ahead of him.

The Spurs are famous for extending the careers of their players. The medical staff is top-notch, and guys listen to the training staff because of trust. You should need no more proof than the quickness with which Wembanyama's deep vein thrombosis was diagnosed and a plan formulated for his recovery.

This organization is about people first, so expect Swipa to rock silver and black colors for a long time. On top of his production, he's a great person by all accounts, making him the perfect fit for San Antonio. The people have already embraced him, and it's only the beginning. The "Go Spurs Go" chants only get louder in the playoffs.
