Every question about the San Antonio Spurs revolves around one concept: how will it impact Victor Wembanyama? He's not your average franchise guy. When you have a transcendent player, making him happy is the only thing that matters. Fortunately, he's not an egotistical maniac, so the organization doesn't have to worry about outlandish demands, but his favor is still important.
Spurs Nation can happily say that the front office has done their part. There have been free agent signings, trades, and astute work in general to make sure they're putting together the kind of roster that can play well around their superstar. So, what is he going to do with it?
Every offensive skill will improve this year for Wembanyama
When Vic told us that his offseason workout was "brutal," that wasn't hard to believe. He fits the mold of those classic legends who don't know how to not give their all in competition. As a student of the game, he traveled the world to train his mind and body in all the right ways for improvement. Predicting he'll explode on the league like a Fast & the Furious action scene is easy.
He's already shown us much of it. During the preseason, San Antonio's xenomorph has put his playmaking on display. Some of his passes have resulted in turnovers, but that's to be expected with such a tall, wiry frame. He's still working out carving around the edges of what's okay and what's not in the NBA. The athletes are so fast. Gaps can close in an instant.
Not too long ago, Gregg Popovich put Jeremy Sochan at point guard. While we're all glad that experiment ended when it did, the experience gave the Polish Prince a valuable perspective on how to play for his teammates. This isn't that for Wemby because the team has plenty of actual playmakers, but he'll have the ball in his hands a lot, so making the right reads and delivering the ball reliably will benefit him long-term.
However, he isn't as raw in that area as Sochan was because he's always been the tallest guy on the court, drawing double teams, and making the right play for his guys. As the taller half of Area 51 harnesses that skill, everything else gets easier. The defense won't know what to expect, and the path to dropping nearly 30 points a game becomes a little clearer.
Everything else is efficiency. Improving his handle is just a different way of saying he needs to be more efficient with his moves; more crisp. We already know that Wemby can do anything he wants from anywhere on the court. This season, his shotmaking, playmaking, and decision-making will be much more efficient, and that will lead the Spurs to a top-five seed in the Western Conference.
Fans have heard several people rave about how quickly Wembanyama learns. In his third year, expect him to teach as he plays his way to an MVP with a stat line of 28 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and a steal a game. That's my prediction for The Alien.
