I did not expect this one.

As the trade deadline approaches, a monsoon of players are being thrown around as potential targets. While the Spurs may not be among the few looking for a huge splash, they could look to add some talent around the edges. Agreeing with that sentiment, ESPN included San Antonio among their list of contenders who could add a player before time expires.

However, the player that ESPN insiders deemed most fit for the Spurs came straight out of left field. Not known to be available, San Antonio would be acquiring Jaylen Wells from the Memphis Grizzlies. Although it was a shock at first, I have come to love the prospect of making this deal happen.

Jaylen Wells is an extremely underrated player

The Memphis Grizzlies are in a fascinating position. The team is at a crossroads, given the now impending trade of franchise star Ja Morant. The front office in Grind City is preparing to ship off the point guard, which could spark a complete roster teardown. While the youthful Jaylen Wells didn't appear to be available before, he could be now.

Jaylen Wells was one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 NBA Draft. The second-round pick made an immediate impact on the Grizzlies, scoring 10.4 points and throwing his name into the hat for Rookie of the Year.

The 6'7" guard-forward hybrid can do it all. Whether it's making plays in transition, scoring around the rim, or lighting it up from deep, he has a diverse skill set. To go along with his elusive offensive tool belt, Wells can adequately defend multiple positions with his perfect NBA frame.

The sophomore would make for an excellent Spur

The most crucial factor in his viability as a Spurs trade target is the three-point shooting. Wells is currently shooting 33.5% from beyond the arc this season. Not great. But the talent is there. As a rookie, he hit an improved 35.2% from deep and showcased that he can fill it up. Shooting at a high volume, he could begin to find success in a more well-rounded Spurs offense.

Overall, Wells is an ideal NBA role player. With skills all over the place, he is the perfect addition to any rotation and would fit nicely alongside the Spurs' cast of bench players. Regardless of whether his shot is falling or not, he would bring a consistent punch to San Antonio's rotation that could be worthwhile.

Depending on how the Grizzlies view Wells as an asset, the Spurs could get a deal done featuring Jeremy Sochan as the main piece. With draft capital included, the Grizzlies could trust their front office and look towards the future rather than wasting a contender-level role player on a middling team.

Jaylen Wells definitely wasn't on my list of Spurs trade targets, but I'd now like to add him to it. As deadline day nears, keep your eye out for a surprise deal including the sophomore standout.
