This is a situation Victor can learn from.

Victor Wembanyama's been a man of the people so far in his NBA career, but he had one of his first controversial media moments on Tuesday night. He elected to avoid the media after the Spurs' Game 5 loss to the Thunder. The league immediately took notice.

The backlash to this has been something to see. X users and media pundits alike have been criticizing him for this response (or lack thereof), some going as far as to call it unsportsmanlike. There is a lot of merit to these reactions. Declining to speak to reporters after an underwhelming performance isn't a great look at all.

Wemby's young, and he's going to make questionable decisions at times. But if he wants to send the best message to his teammates moving forward, he has to steer clear of moments like this, especially following a loss that was well within his team's control.

This is an opportunity for Victor to grow as a leader

There's a lot that comes with being the best player on your team. Not only are you expected to perform at a high level every night, but you're also looked at as the de facto leader. And so far in his career, Victor's done an exceptional job at that.

You can see how his teammates approach and react to him. They sing his praises on a night-in and night-out basis, and his contagious energy rubs off on them. He's also not afraid to get vocal and be a motivator, and we saw that a few nights ago when he seemingly gave Carter Bryant guidance and words of encouragement after some mistakes on the court.

But accountability is another part of leadership. Avoiding speaking to the media after a loss can be seen as dodging fair criticism. If it's true that Wemby leads by example, then facing the music after a controllable loss sends a much better message to his teammates.

There's another side to this that works in Victor's favor

Now, here's another way to look at this situation. While Wemby's decision wasn't the most professional one, it could be a sign that he's motivated to turn things up a notch in Game 6.

Victor's one of those guys who can turn a loss or a rough individual performance into fuel for a strong response. We've already seen that in the West Finals. The Spurs were embarrassed by the Thunder at home in Game 3, and Wemby came back in Game 4 with a strong 33-point outing that tied the series 2-2.

The Frenchman knows how to turn lemons into lemonade. Sure, criticisms and responses to the ugliness of Game 5 are loud right now. But he'll do his best to flip the narrative on Thursday evening with an explosive performance to extend San Antonio's impressive postseason run.
