The Spurs are filled with players who've never been to the postseason before, yet they're stepping up and performing as if they've been at this for a while. The guy who made the biggest playoff leap is, drumroll please, Victor Wembanyama. He's showing us that he's everything we thought he'd be.
It sounds like a cliché pick, I know. But we're witnessing Wemby step into his place as the NBA's next big icon. Usually, the lights are too bright for that young star making his first playoff appearance, sending them home early with a checklist of things to work on in the offseason.
Not the case for Victor. While he hasn't been perfect, his postseason impact cannot be denied. He's been one of the best performers on this stage regardless of age bracket, showing that he's built for the big moments. You'll be hard-pressed to find another 22-year-old in league history who's been this dominant in their first playoffs.
Victor's proving that his defense can translate to the playoffs
One of the most annoying things to watch as an NBA fan is when a dominant defensive player can't bring that same energy into the playoffs. Look, I'm a big Rudy Gobert fan, but he had a stretch of time where his postseason performance didn't reflect his Defensive Player of the Year awards.
We haven't seen that with Victor. Instead, he's further validated his unanimous regular-season DPOY selection. The Spurs have limited opponent paint scoring through each round so far, and most of that is due to Wemby's presence. If you look at the Timberwolves series specifically, there was a drastic change in San Antonio's interior defense with him on the floor versus off.
Additionally, we've seen him have some of the best performances of his career as a stopper in this year's playoffs. His 12-block game against the Timberwolves was one of the signature defensive displays in NBA history.
Wemby's showing that his defense is more than just pretty regular-season moments. He's elevated his dominance on that end to fit the high stakes of the playoffs, and it's paying off dividends for the Spurs.
We're watching Victor grow offensively right in front of our eyes
As the postseason progressed, the Spurs faced even tougher defensive attacks round by round. First, it was the Blazers, then the Timberwolves, and now the Thunder. Wemby's proving that he can find his place on the offensive end against these elite groups on such a big stage.
The Alien has put together some amazing scoring performances through the playoffs. We've seen our fair share of 30-plus point outbursts from him, including a ridiculous 41-point and 24-rebound showcase against the Thunder. He's had no problem adjusting to the countless defensive looks thrown at him.
It's not easy for a young player to respond to such massive challenges in their first playoff appearance, especially if they're facing off against some of the NBA's finest defenses. Victor hasn't been fazed at all, approaching everything like he's been around the block for a while.
Stepping into superstar status is something only a few can do in their first playoff run, but Wemby's doing it with ease. And the scary thing is, he still can get even better from here.
