San Antonio added Carter Bryant to the roster with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 draft, and that means bad news for the Oklahoma City Thunder. To win in the league these days, you need depth, plenty of ball handlers, wing players, playmakers, shot makers; it seems like you just need a bunch of perimeter guys who can do it all. They added that with Bryant.
Alumni of the same Arizona Wildcats as fan-favorite Sean Elliott, Carter has many of the same traits, but with the benefit of being born in a more advanced timeline. He's strong and athletic, but he can also knock down a three-point shot. The Spurs needed that desperately, and they didn't overlook it in the draft this year.
San Antonio can challenge OKC's personnel
With De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, Carter Bryant, Harrison Barnes, and Keldon Johnson, San Antonio has a deep lineup of guards and wings who can all contribute and play interchangeably. They'll be able to switch on the perimeter no matter who they're playing against, and they have a defensive monster in Victor Wembanyama behind them to protect the rim.
Spurs fans wanted the team to address the spacing on the floor. They didn't have enough of it in Wembanyama's first two seasons. They're making that more of a priority this season by adding Bryant, but also they want to be able to defend. The former Wildcat is 6'8 with a 6'11" wingspan. His size is a massive tool, and he uses it well.
The Thunder just won a championship by using a bunch of young wing players who can defend and hit threes. San Antonio will be looking to slow that down without necessarily playing the same style because the Silver and Black have an extraterrestrial to play through. That will be the difference. The results will be that the OKC dynasty will end up grounded before it takes off.
