Devin Vassell is finally becoming the Spurs player they drafted him to be

Devin Vassell is undoubtedly one of the Spurs' most valuable players. That isn't just because of his ability to score efficiently, but also because of his elite two-way impact. His embrace of this sort of role isn't necessarily new, though; instead, it's a full return to form for him.

"A lot of games, my shot may not fall, and that's okay, but how else can you impact the game?" Vassell states in a recent video. "If a team goes on a run, how do you stop that? If you're on a run, how do you continue it? Like, just, just going through that, that's one of the big things I've been trying to lean on."

It's been great seeing Dev buy into this sort of mentality even more, and ironically, it's exactly the type of player San Antonio drafted him to be.

Devin Vassell is embracing the role he was always meant to play

In the 2021 NBA Draft, Devin Vassell was seen as one of the premier 3&D players in his class. During his time at Florida State, he showed a ton of promise as a solid scorer who could also utilize his length and athleticism to get stops on the perimeter.

But as he progressed through his NBA career, a lot of weight was put on his shoulders to lead San Antonio's offense, so his impact on the other side of the ball was more of an afterthought. Now, he was good as a higher-volume scorer; between 2022 and 2024, he nearly averaged 20 points per game with impressive three-point shooting numbers.

But as the Spurs' roster deepened over the last few seasons, Vassell's role in the Spurs' offense got smaller, forcing him to embrace his duties as a two-way wing. And he's done an amazing job at that. During the 2026 playoffs, his efficient shooting and staunch perimeter defense were a huge reason behind the team's run to the NBA Finals.

As San Antonio started to solidify its identity in the post-Kawhi Leonard era, so did Devin. This is the role he's always been meant to play, and it's a driving factor behind this team's resurgence as a championship contender.

Vassell's willingness to accept a relatively smaller role in San Antonio's offense has rubbed off on his other teammates. Dylan Harper, De'Aaron Fox, and Keldon Johnson are just a few examples of players who have unselfishly embraced ways to impact the game that look a bit different than what they're used to.

So Devin is more than just a great player. He's a bona fide leader for this group, and that's evident through his influence on his teammates. Without him, it would be difficult for this Spurs team to cultivate such a strong culture of unselfishness.

This is more than just some feel-good story. This is what makes San Antonio special and is why they're on the brink of taking home a championship very soon.
