You have to respect the dedication.

The boys are back together already. It's barely been over a month since the end of a long nine-month campaign that they finished with a trip to the NBA Finals, and De'Aaron Fox has several Spurs back in the gym.

Offseason workouts by themselves don't win championships, but they often reveal who is taking ownership of their work to do so. For Fox, his performance in that final series left much to be desired. As a professional, he knows the pressure will be on to make up for that.

It's encouraging to see him leading the charge to right those wrongs now instead of waiting for training camp.

Fox isn't waiting for training camp to move the Spurs forward

These workouts were held in Katy, TX—the area where Fox is known to reside. There could be several reasons why they chose that location, but the host's leadership must be somewhere near the top. Swipa has been criticized for his nonchalant attitude in the past, but he should be judged by his actions.

Organizing these workouts shows accountability and leadership. He's not sulking away from the spotlight, knowing the smoke a large segment of the fan base has for him. Instead, he's gathering his guys together to prepare for their response. He's bringing in the new guy so he can get acclimated to the Spurs way.

As Harrison Barnes put it in an Instagram caption, "Iron sharpens Iron." That work must start early if San Antonio has any chance of making it back to the NBA Finals. As talented as this roster is, nothing is guaranteed. Other teams are gearing up to stop the Silver and Black from dominating the league.

They won't just lie down because Victor Wembanyama is coming of age, and the Spurs put together a strong group. Wars will be waged on the hardwood as they desperately try to keep SA from applying a death grip on the Larry O'Brien trophy for the foreseeable future. But the guys know that, too.

San Antonio cut the line, jumping everyone's perceived timeline when they made the finals last season. That put a brighter spotlight on Fox when he couldn't perform at the level everyone hoped for. Expectations will only grow from here, and he's operating like he's fully aware of that.

These workouts don't erase what happened in June, but they show the right response. The best leaders don't just talk about getting better, and they don't just try to improve alone. They create opportunities for the team to grow together.

Fox can't rewrite last season's ending, but he can help shape how the next one begins. Hosting this workout is another sign he's fully invested in making sure the Spurs are ready for another championship chase. It's the most you can ask for.
