Controversial new Giannis/Spurs trade proposal wouldn't happen in a million years

The Spurs would only make this deal if they lost their minds.

The Spurs just turned in one of the best regular seasons in the past decade with one of the youngest cores in the league, and I think that makes folks nervous. In a newly proposed deal for the inevitable Giannis Antetokounmpo breakup, a Sports Illustrated writer suggested San Antonio send Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, Devin Vassell, and four first-round draft picks to get a deal done.

Now, control your outrage, Spurs Nation. I know. I know. A trade like that would cause the strongest of rebukes of the front office. Fans everywhere would demand jobs be lost and a complete re-evaluation of strategy take place. I mean, the Silver and Black spent years building up assets and piecing together a roster that currently stands as the second seed in the entire league.

Ripping it all apart for a player who's increasingly struggled to make it to the end of the season would be a horrendous decision. Thankfully, Brian Wright has enough of a track record for us to know that he's of sound mind. He'd never make that deal, and there are plenty of reasons for that.

The Spurs don't need Giannis to conquer the league

This is the part that would-be dealmakers don't seem to realize. San Antonio was challenging OKC for the number one record in the NBA with a superstar only in his third season, a second-year guard as the lead playmaker, and a rookie leading their bench unit. They don't need to trade for anyone right now—let alone a star on the other side of 30 who can't stay healthy.

When you look up The Greek Freak's numbers, you'll see that, other than the 36-game attendance record from this season, he usually suits up for over 60 contests per year. That's really not bad for a guy with the physical playstyle he's used over the years. However, it's when he's been getting hurt that's the problem.

For three straight years from 2023 to 2025, Giannis suffered an injury that derailed Milwaukee's chances of competing for a title. Now he's coming off ailments that have sidelined him for more than 50% of the season. His health concerns are getting worse. You know who doesn't have those problems? 25-year-old Devin Vassell and a couple of 20-year-olds in Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant.

Not to mention the number of picks also being surrendered for a chance to pay the soon-to-be ex-Milwaukee Bucks star $60+ million to maybe compete for a couple of years. They'd be mortgaging their future on a prayer. These people have the wrong organization. San Antonio is not, and has never been, that desperate.

They'll keep trudging along, adding to the margins instead of disrupting a successful core. Too many franchises get themselves in trouble by making the wrong deal at the wrong time. It ain't happening with this one. Find yourselves another guinea pig.
