Just another thing that makes this group so special.

There's something very interesting about the San Antonio Spurs. It's not just the fact that they have a 7'4" unicorn that can do just about anything on the court, but it's also their rookie contributors. Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant are one of the few first-year duos in league history to contribute at a high level for a contender.

These two have been amazing individually. Harper's been dynamic on the offensive end, while Carter Bryant is displaying characteristics of a future elite two-way, 3&D threat. The upside for this pair is extremely promising.

But the two are doing more than just impressing with their flashes of brilliance. Their production on both ends has been a driving factor behind San Antonio's success this season.

Carter Bryant and Dylan Harper are a rare duo

It's important to know how rare it is for two first-year players to contribute to contenders quite like this. If anything, you'll usually find one rookie playing a prominent role on a team of such high stature, but deploying two is unique.

Ironically, the last time we saw this was a few years back with the OKC Thunder in 2024. Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace were featured heavily in the lineup, and that team finished with the top seed in the Western Conference. After that, the list of contenders with this setup is pretty small.

The Spurs are following a similar formula. They're building a strong core through the draft and pushing these young pieces into tough roles early. It's exactly what we're seeing with Bryant and Harper, adding their names to a small niche in NBA history.

Mitch Johnson has found a unique formula for his rookie pairing

The biggest challenge for any NBA rookie, particularly first-round picks, is finding the balance between performing and having the room to develop their game. They're expected to be a force for their team and produce at a high level while still finding the space to grow their game and roll with the punches of an 82-game season.

This is a formula that Mitch Johnson has perfected. He's given Harper and Bryant important tasks while still giving them the space to grow and develop their games. For Harper, he's been challenged this season to not only be a sparkplug off the bench but also grow as a shooter.

Johnson's throwing Carter Bryant into the fire, too, giving him tough defensive assignments while also pushing him to be a floor spacer and improve as a shooter. Both rookies have seen massive upticks in their accuracy from distance lately.

It's not easy to push first-year players to improve game by game while also giving them key roles within the team's system, but Johnson found that balance and perfected it.

Harper and Bryant aren't just being used for the regular season

Coach Johnson isn't just letting these guys do their work through the regular season just to shelve them in the playoffs. He fully expects to deploy these rookies in the playoffs.

For Harper, this was obvious. He's usually one of the first substitutions off the bench. For Bryant, there were some questions early on about his role in the playoffs as he's logging about 11 minutes per game. But Johnson has made it known that he will be giving him reps in the postseason.

The Spurs are making it clear that they're all in on their rookie talent, which could make a run towards an NBA championship that much more satisfying by the beginning of the summer.
