Carter Bryant took part in some open gym games with Klay Thompson, Evan Mobley, Spencer Dinwiddie, and a bunch of other hoopers. The video was uploaded to YouTube, and it's 25 minutes, giving us a real look at how those games went. Bryant did not disappoint. He showed his freakish defensive capabilities, elevating above the rim for a block, but the offense is what raised my eyebrow.
It's the facet of his game that skeptics are afraid of right now. It's understandable, considering he only averaged six points last season at Arizona, but we've been told that he didn't have that responsibility time and time again. Maybe we should just listen to those folks, because if he can provide the Spurs with something similar to what he showed in the open run, he'll be fine from the beginning.
Carter Bryant has a fine offensive game for a rookie role player
First, let's be clear: I know that what happens in an open gym isn't the end-all-be-all for NBA players. It's a little different when you step onto that official hardwood and teams have gameplanned against you. However, it's not nothing, and I beg of you all to let go of the Ben Simmons offseason hype videos that have tainted your faith in anything seen during the offseason.
I'm tired of seeing Simmons' name every time a Jeremy Sochan video is posted or anything else of the like. We get it. Ben disappointed us all after entering the league with what looked like all the potential in the world.
Let's not forget that players do improve. Kawhi Leonard took leaps with his offensive game, as did Tony Parker, OG Anunoby, Jimmy Butler, and countless others who entered the league with one defined skill set before evolving. It happens way more than some of you are giving it credit for, so it's not outrageous to believe that the work these guys are putting in this offseason will translate.
Bryant was a 37% three-point shooter at Arizona, and he drained a few deep shots on catch-and-shoot opportunities in the open gym run. That's exactly what San Antonio is going to need from him, and he can do that. He also showed some handles, breaking down a couple of defenders, even making one stumble before missing the pull-up three.
He also used his handle to "put his defender in the blender" as an unidentified teammate shouted after he shook loose, and drove baseline, finishing at the rim through contact.
It's unclear whether Bryant has been working with Olin Simplis, The Guard Whisperer, or not, but Simplis was present. Stephon Castle has worked with TGW a couple of times, so if CB is following in Castle's footsteps, he's taking his training seriously. Olin has also worked with reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, among others. It's all a good sign. One that Spurs fans should be excited about.
