Throughout the decades, the Spurs have been predicated on playing great defense. Whether it was David Robinson leading a stout group in the 90s or Tim Duncan bolstering an unstoppable group in the 2000s, the Spurs have always taken pride in playing top-notch defense.
With Victor Wembanyama as the Spurs' lead man, this sentiment is no different now. While things on that end of the court haven't been so pretty recently, the Spurs are preparing to shoot themselves back up the defensive leaderboard.
With a fully healthy Wembanyama and a cast of savvy and lengthy defenders around him, the Spurs look to take the league by storm. However, the key to unlocking an NBA-best defense for the Spurs has yet to step on the floor. His name is Carter Bryant.
The Spurs came away with the perfect draft pick
It was unbelievable that the Spurs were able to snag Bryant. There is no reason why he should have been on the board at 14. Not only was he a steal, but he was drafted into the perfect destination. As mentioned, the Spurs are a defense-oriented team, and Bryant does exactly that.
While other organizations may have feared his offensive woes, the Spurs drafted Bryant to be their primary wing-stopper. Even if he can't become a lethal three-point shooter, what he brings as a perimeter defender is more than enough. The Spurs have plenty of offense already on the roster; Bryant won't be tasked with a whole lot. His commitment to playing defense is all that the Spurs need.
While Bryant isn't expected to garner a ton of playing time right off the bat, the Spurs are buying into what he can produce for the team in the future, and the future in question is exhilarating.
Carter Bryant is destined to be great
Being a great defender is a premium in the modern NBA. The great ones are rewarded with millions of extra dollars, and the teams that have these rare prototypes will refuse any offer to give them away.
So, if you can get your hands on one of them, you are in a great spot. Fortunately for the Spurs, the signs are becoming clear that Bryant will be one of the great ones. From day one, Bryant was putting in his full effort.
Just weeks after being drafted to San Antonio, Bryant stepped onto the Summer League court and gave his all. Bryant was picking up players full court and completely locking them down. Nobody could get past him. This level of effort is scarce, especially before even touching the real thing.
If one thing can be made clear about Bryant, he's an absolute dog. No matter how you phrase it, it is obvious that this rookie will be hounding everybody that comes across him for years to come, and Spurs nation will love it.
Everything is there for Bryant to become a defensive menace next to Wembanyama and form a cataclysmic defense. Now we have to patiently wait for it all to come together.
