Monday night produced a shocking and incredibly exciting circumstance for the San Antonio Spurs, as the team jumped all the way up to number two in the NBA Draft Lottery. The Spurs will now own picks number 14 and two in June's draft.

A team that has gotten an incredible amount of luck throughout their history at this event continued their run of favorable circumstances once again. After landing the number one pick two seasons ago which they used to draft Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio will now have yet another top-two pick.

If the Spurs were not set up to be a playoff team next season before, they certainly appear to be in that position now. San Antonio will be rolling out a rotation in 2025-26 featuring Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and whoever they end up taking with the second and 14th overall picks on June 25.

At the conclusion of the draft lottery, Spurs General Manager Brian Wright was interviewed about his thoughts on the results of the event. "Shock, excitement, you feel all the emotions," he said. "But an incredible night, super excited to get to work ... This is a deep draft. We have a lot of work to do to put it together, but in the early planning, we like the potential group that could be there."

Brian Wright is thrilled about the Spurs' draft luck

Wright's reaction was certainly even-keeled, but there's no doubt he has plenty of excitement about what is to come for this team. The fact that this Spurs team, which was on a fantastic trajectory before Wembanyama's unfortunate season-ending affliction in February, now has two lottery selections as well as a top-two pick is almost unfathomable.

And as San Antonio's General Manager stated, there is a lot of talent in this draft. The Spurs can certainly get a high-ceiling rotational player with the second pick, while also having legitimate hopes of finding another useful prospect at 14 as well.

It was basically the ideal outcome for the Spurs in this draft lottery, outside of the scenario in which they landed the top pick and earned the right to draft Cooper Flagg. San Antonio basically already has a playoff-caliber roster on its hands, and now they will get to add additional ancillary talent as well.

The alternative? Perhaps if the Spurs are really looking for a slam dunk, they could opt to package these picks along with other assets in an effort to acquire another established star player. It's all working right now in San Antonio.
