The possibilities of the Spurs obtaining Giannis Antetokounmpo have increased greatly due to that exciting NBA Draft Lottery. San Antonio had a less than 30% chance to land in the top four, and not only did they enter the top 4, they landed the number two pick.
ESPN's draft expert Jonathon Givony was on NBA Today earlier discussing how talented Dylan Harper is. He's looked at as the consensus number two pick, and everything after that is up in the air. San Antonio could help Milwaukee start their rebuild with a kick in the rear they should be begging for, and nobody else really comes close to the package the Silver and Black can put together now.
The Spurs have a clear path to adding Giannis
The NBA community is up in arms about this development, and it's absolutely hilarious. The term "rigged" is trending on X as I type this, and it's because they're scared of what is now possible in South Texas. The Spurs have eight first-round picks and a boatload of second-round picks, they have young players with potential and movable contracts. That makes them dangerous.
I haven't even mentioned Victor Wembanyama yet, who is important to this puzzle, because ESPN's Shams Charania indicated earlier that he's hearing that Giannis wants to play with another star who can take the pressure off of him. Well, fortunately for him, Wembanyama has one of the strongest gravitational pulls on the court. Grouping up would be a nightmare for teams, but that's not all they have.
De'Aaron Fox and his speed will put unrelenting pressure on defenses and open up follow lanes for dump-off passes to Giannis or kick-outs to Wembanyama. They can all collapse the defense in their own way, and Vic's range stretching out to the logo will make it almost impossible for the opposition to effectively cover the ground necessary to defend with any success.
How could you not be interested in playing in a situation like that? There was another rumor that the Greek Freak is considering what it would be like to play in a state without income taxes, and Texas has that benefit as well. There are endless reasons why the trade works for the Bucks and for Giannis.
The Spurs would likely have to part with Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell, as well as a player like Harrison Barnes, but they should be able to keep Stephon Castle if they include the number two overall pick. That's a huge win and ensures San Antonio will have a strong young core no matter what.
Milwaukee would have a chance to add Dylan Harper, along with a couple of players they could start or bring off their bench to be competitive and bring some excitement to a fan base who will undoubtedly be hurt by the former MVP's departure. It's a win-win-win.
