As the San Antonio Spurs look to return to title contention, they may have found a competitive edge to help them do just that. Star Victor Wembanyama recently came up with an interesting idea to create a superfan section dedicated to only the craziest Spurs fans.
The goal is to create a home court advantage that isn't easily replicated. Historically, the Spurs have had a terrific home-court advantage, especially during the Tim Duncan era. They went 40-1 during the 2016-17 season, tied for the best mark in NBA history, and also went 38-3 during the 2004-05 season.
The Spurs are hoping to have that type of dominance at home, and having a competitive advantage such as bonkers fans is one way to do it. It's not as easy for other teams to replicate as one might think.
Some teams have been stuck in mediocrity long enough to not have built up a reliable fanbase. Other fan bases are more fair-weather, while other fan bases are more die-hard, but their teams just aren't very good.
The Spurs are creating a distinct home-court advantage
Wembanyama has been surprisingly hands-on in picking the superfan section, even hosting tryouts in person. There have already been some memorable auditions, with them potentially making the cut.

Having an especially raucous group of fans near the court could help the Spurs get a leg up on the competition. We hear all the time about how loud crowds can rattle teams. Why not aim for that same kind of environment in San Antonio?
The fact that Wembanyama is already thinking ahead and trying to cultivate that with the Spurs is encouraging. Even more so with him taking a hands-on approach.
Victor Wembanyama is putting his mark on the Spurs
Having diehard fans get a chance to meet and interact with the new face of the franchise and having him handpick the fans to represent the Spurs is a cool dynamic. Not that Wembanyama needs help engraciating himself with Spurs fans after the wild summer that he had.
From studying with Buddhist Monks, appearing in an animated series, meeting up with Kevin Garnett and working out with Hakeem Olajuwon, he's almost as interesting off the court as he is on.
Hopefully, he will be in for a great season and the Spurs will be able to benefit from a newfound home court advantage in the postseason.
Overall, the Spurs having a dedicated section for superfans should help to give them a distinct home court advantage. If it does, then that, combined with a better roster, could propel the Spurs back to the playoffs next season.
