Eviscerating Anthony Davis DPOY case after he directly disputes Wembanyama

He can't be serious right now.

This is the most ridiculous thing the NBA has going on right now. A respected superstar is on a campaign for sympathy in an attempt to garner votes for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Anthony Davis has never received the honor, and now that Victor Wembanyama is here, he likely never will. That's made him very unhappy, and he's being loud and whiny about it.

This isn't the first time AD has complained about not winning the DPOY trophy, so it likely won't be the last. But it should be. It's embarrassing. Especially when you consider his claim that he would stop thinking about it when he said "I'm over it," in an interview with ESPN last year. Davis is a sensational defender, but if anyone should be upset about never winning this award, it's Bam Adebayo.

Bam has had some top-tier years on defense in this league, and he truly guards positions 1-5. But the Lakers big man is the one complaining, so he's the one who will be excoriated today.

Davis picked the wrong year to complain about Wembanyama

Anthony Davis was silent while Rudy Gobert was winning all those DPOY trophies. That's the guy he should have been complaining about because there is no way Gobert should have won four of them. Waiting until the transcendent guy enters the arena makes Davis look like he either has an alarming lack of awareness or is intentionally disingenuous.

Acting like he doesn't understand the significance of what Wembanyama is doing this year makes no sense if he's been paying attention. Averaging four blocks a game hasn't been done since Dikembe Mutombo did it 30 years ago. He plays excellent in drop coverage, defends well on the perimeter, and protects the rim at a historic rate.

Victor has 73% of the entire San Antonio Spurs team's blocks. That leads the league by a wide margin. The second-place player sits at 56% of his team's blocks. That player is not Anthony Davis. Wemby turns would-be aggressors into fearful attackers who dare not challenge a Martian. They won't even look at the basket at times. AD doesn't have that effect.

In fact, the former LA champ isn't in the top five in FanDuel's odds to win the award—he's 10th (+25000). AD hasn't had the same impact he's had in years past, making it more ridiculous to hear him on this pity tour right now. The Lakers may be above San Antonio in the standings, but they're only ahead by four games in the loss column.

The Silver and Black have struggled this month, but one of their best games was against the Lakers, holding them to 102 points and smacking them by 24. His team just got a dose of Wemby's defensive impact, so he should know the problems the Alien causes. Vic had three steals and two blocks that night, and he was a +26.

San Antonio's defensive struggles this month have dropped them from 13th to 19th in the league. The Lakers are 22nd. This man is delusional. Anthony Davis has no ground to stand on in his bid for a Defensive Player of the Year award. But he did provide a good laugh, so thanks for that, I guess.
