A Steph Curry trade only makes sense to the Spurs in this one scenario

With the NBA offseason having slowed to a crawl, the rumor mill is still going strong. In fact, the San Antonio Spurs are seen as a possible landing spot for superstar Steph Curry. That's despite nothing more than speculation from the likes of the Ringer's Bill Simmons.

Perhaps there may be something to Curry considering playing elsewhere after the Golden State Warriors' awful offseason. That has led to rumors of Curry being unhappy.

After teams such as the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers landed stars this summer, there are only a few remaining potential landing spots for Curry. The Spurs would seemingly top that list.

A Spurs-Curry trade can't include Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper

Let's say that Curry were to become available this summer or during the season, would the Spurs be interested in him, and should they consider trading for him? The answer to the first question is an absolute yes.

Of course, they should absolutely be interested in Curry! Given his status as a future Hall of Famer and his still playing at an incredibly high level even into his late 30s.

As for whether the Spurs should trade for him, that's a much more difficult answer. For one, any potential trade for Curry will likely involve Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper. That's an obvious no-go, but everyone else should be on the table in a potential Curry trade.

If Curry were to demand a trade, several things would work out in this first favor the spirit's favor. One being that you contenders have enough trade assets to make the Warriors a competitive offer. The second being that if he doesn't find an extension this summer, he can become a free agent next year.

What could a Steph Curry-to-the-Spurs trade look like?

That would give him leeway to choose his landing spot. It could also give the Spurs a leg up in trade negotiations, with them able to stand firm on trading Castle, Harper, or Victor Wembanyama --which wouldn't happen in any universe.

A comparable trade package would be what the Houston Rockets gave up to land Kevin Durant. Durant was playing at a similarly high level when the Rockets acquired him from the Phoenix Suns.

They gave up a former second overall pick in Jalen Green, a starter in Dillon Brooks, the 10th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five seconds. San Antonio could match that offer, and then some.

De'Aaron Fox isn't a positive trade asset at the moment, though he is a two-time All-Star and would be needed to match salaries. Add in Carter Bryant, the Atlanta Hawks 2027 first, the Spurs 2029 first, and a 2030 with the Sacramento Kings, and that could rival what the Rockets gave up for Durant.

Of course, parade means much more to the Warriors than Durant meant to the Suns, but he is 38 years old and could become a free agent after next season. There is a very small list of teams that could offer that much and give Curry a chance to win a championship.

Therefore, if you want to become available, and the Spurs were to offer Fox, Bryant, and three firsts, that could be enough to acquire Curry. It would be the only way the Spurs should consider trading for Curry.
