Long-time NBA journalist Marc Stein reports that the Wizards are a potential destination for Trae Young, and man, I'll tell you what; I'm very happy that San Antonio does not operate like Washington or any of these other terrible franchises, for that matter. The reason this is laughable to me is because of the talk I heard from fans of the nation's capital's basketball embarrassment after the 2025 NBA Draft.
They were incensed that they couldn't land Dylan Harper and insisted the system was rigged against them, favoring San Antonio instead. Now, we know this is nonsense, but you'd be surprised how many of them feel this way. My counterargument to them has nothing to do with defending the integrity of the league or the Spurs, though. They simply don't deserve nice things.
Washington is one of those organizations that seem to get major decisions wrong most of the time. It's astounding. They aren't as bad as the Pelicans, but they're close enough. If they make this move, it'll only be the latest example of ineptitude because there are more.
The Wizards can't get out of their own way
Remember the John Wall and Bradley Beal era? That actually wasn't horrible. I didn't love Wall dancing for 20 seconds straight during his introduction in his first home game, but maybe I'm just grumpy. It seemed a little childish, and I was shocked they let him do it. He had an unbelievable 29-point, 13-assist, 9-steal performance in an overtime win over Philly, though, so all was forgiven... but not forgotten.
The way that era ended put them in the position they're in now: desperate. For some reason, they traded Wall to the Rockets for Westbrook and doubled down on Beal when, at that point, nothing was working. Then they gave Brad a ridiculously lucrative contract that strained their ability to make any significant moves on the rest of the roster. He and Russ were making too much.
They had the chance to draft Stephon Castle, but they opted for Alex Sarr instead. That could have been their guard of the future. This season, they could have gone with Cedric Coward or Derik Queen. That would have set them up for a very bright future, but instead, they're about to trade for Trae Young. An inconsistent offensive player and a black hole on defense. I don't even know what that's supposed to do for them.
I'm just glad it's not San Antonio's problem. Brian Wright made the right choice in drafting Castle and Harper. He pulled the plug on the DeMar DeRozan/Dejounte Murray era at the right time so we could land Victor Wembanyama. When Young wanted to be dealt to the 210, Wright didn't make the deal. He traded for De'Aaron Fox instead, and, again, that was the right decision.
Everything from the deals he's made to the ones he hasn't made has put SA in the position they're in now. The Silver and Black are one of the best teams in the league with the brightest future ahead of them. Bad teams are a reminder to be thankful for the good one we have. I know I'm grateful. I'm sure the rest of Spurs Nation is too.
