We may be closer to this happening than you realize.

Trusted, veteran Phoenix radio host John Gambadoro just revealed that Kevin Durant's people are into San Antonio as a possible spot for the Hall-of-Fame wing.

"The team that I heard last night in speaking with somebody pretty close to the situation with KD is 'keep your eye on the Spurs. That KD could have some interest in the Spurs with Fox and Wembanyama.'" - Gambadoro or Gambo

This reinforces Shams Charania's recent report that Durant and the Spurs had mutual interest at the trade deadline. Ultimately, SA could very well have that same interest now, but we won't know that until a potential deal is done, as San Antonio's front office is notoriously tight-lipped. However, there's a little too much smoke for there not to be flames hidden somewhere through the fog.

Durant to the Spurs may be close to happening

Fans have been asking the front office to make a move to upgrade this roster for a long time, and that move may be on the way. Gambo insists that the Suns' front office is motivated to get a deal done before the NBA Draft on June 25. That gives us 21 days from the time this is being written, if he's correct.

It makes sense, though. If you're Phoenix, you're going to want draft assets to help you rebuild or retool, so getting a lottery pick in a draft this deep is a must. The Spurs could trade them the 14th pick, and if the whispers that they're in search of a center are to be believed, they could draft a player like Thomas Sorber. San Antonio could also trade Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson in the deal.

Gambo suggested Harrison Barnes be included to make the money work, but the money Barnes is making versus KJ isn't far off. I'd rather keep HB's shooting. Durant will undoubtedly help the spacing, but they need more than one threat from the perimeter, and if the former Kings forward can keep draining threes like he did this season, he's invaluable to San Antonio.

There's no way the Spurs would give up the second overall pick for a player as old as Durant, but the 14th pick should be in play. They'd be able to draft Dylan Harper and secure their future, while adding a top-tier weapon to help them over the playoff hump.

They'd actually be able to send Victor Wembanyama to the bench without worrying about the offense collapsing. More moves would need to be made to help sure up the defense, but they have free agency and other assets to trade to get this roster where it needs to be.

Fans have been split on the idea of an elder KD coming to town, but rest assured, the Spurs won't mortgage the future for an old player. If he comes, he'll be had for a reasonable deal, and San Antonio will be off to the races; the race for seis, that is.
