Most people accept that the Spurs are further along than they thought they'd be. The word "contender" has been thrown about, but it still feels like most of them believe San Antonio is a long shot. Vegas isn't on the same page. Victor Wembanyama has the fourth-highest odds to win MVP of the NBA Finals, according to FanDuel.
FanDuel's NBA Finals MVP odds
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (+115)
Nikola Jokic (+900)
Jalen Brunson (+1500)
Victor Wembanyama (+1600)
This is going to come across as mean, but putting Jalen Brunson on this list implies the Knicks have a chance to win the championship. That's giving false hope to an already desperate market. I subscribe to the Becky Hammon school of logic that says an undersized point guard can't be the best player on a team that wins the title. That's an aside that I needed to get off my chest.
As much as society shuns the gambling scene, the powers that be have a strong track record when keeping tabs on award season. Clearly, they still believe OKC will win, but getting put into the top four to win such a prestigious award that can only be obtained by reaching the NBA Finals feels like an important moment.
This team has major talent, and they have a little more than a puncher's chance to make it to the end of the yellow brick road to meet the wizard.
Wembanyama makes anything possible when paired with the Spurs
When LeBron James took the Cleveland Cavaliers to the championship round in 2007 (before they were swept by the Spurs), nobody thought they should have been there. He was only in his fourth season, and that team wasn't overly talented. The Detroit Pistons were still a favorite to win the Eastern Conference, but they couldn't overcome LeBron. He was that good at that age.
Michael Jordan was putting up some of the most ridiculous numbers we've ever seen from the moment he stepped into the league. He couldn't overcome dynasties, but as soon as you gave him a competent team with a good number two option, he went on two of the greatest runs we've ever seen.
Well, Wemby is a GOAT-level player with good number two, three, and four options. The Spurs have done a tremendous job of putting talent around him who can defend and get buckets. They can do something impossible with that level of skill on the roster.
They have their legendary player. They'll need great coaching, and Mitch Johnson is off to a great start in that department.
