Wemby's 40-point night overshadows biggest story of Spurs' season

This team's offensive depth is downright scary.

Lakers fans didn't get the benefit of a good game last night, but they got one hell of a show. It's always a joy when Victor Wembanyama goes ballistic. However, the truth of San Antonio's 2025-26 campaign is that an explosion like that is always on the table, and it can come from anywhere. That's one of the most dangerous things about this ball club, and the NBA has to recognize it by now.

The Spurs have only gotten 40-point games from Wemby and Stephon Castle this year, but the list of players to drop 30 is longer than a CVS receipt. Joining Area 51 with 30-point outings are De'Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, Dylan Harper, Julian Champagnie, and Keldon Johnson. They're like the Avengers!

Spurs' offensive depth makes them one of the NBA's top contenders

With this kind of firepower, it makes the Silver and Black almost impossible to stop consistently because it's very difficult to game plan for every player with the detail that would be necessary. It's important as ever to have that advantage on the team if they want to compete at a high level, and that's exactly what they've been aiming for.

Vic is a top five player in his third season because he brings the entire package in a way we've never seen before. He's not one of the five best offensive players consistently (yet), but he's close enough and his defensive abilities are far beyond everyone else in the league.

But this is the NBA. Everyone is skilled, and there are defensive schemes opponents with the right personnel can use to slow him down, especially since he's still only 22 years old. That's where the other guys come into the picture. The younger half of Area 51 just dropped 40 a few nights ago.

When teams are forced to pick their poison between letting a great player eat and another potentially devastating alternative, there are usually only two or three major threats. For example, you had to choose between blanketing Steph Curry and shading your defense toward Kevin Durant during their time together.

When LeBron James was in Miami, you had to decide who you would pay attention to between King James and Dwyane Wade, with Chris Bosh there as a more than capable third option. It was a nightmare. But you usually didn't have to worry about Mario Chalmers or Shane Battier dropping 30 on you too.

In San Antonio, you have to stop Wembanyama first, sure, but the problem is the next 7 guys can all put your lights out. That's going to be a huge advantage come the playoffs, because there very well may be some terrible performances from the young guys, but we can expect Fox, Barnes, or anyone else to make up for them. They're all more than capable. They've shown it all season.
