The Spurs have had a problem all season that's just now begun to truly cost them, and Victor Wembanyama called the team out for it after their Tuesday night loss to the Grizzlies.
"The fact is that we play down to the level of the opponent," the 7'5" Frenchman told local beat reporters. "So, the good thing is we can match up with anybody and look anybody in the eyes, but the bad thing is we look everybody in the eyes, and sometimes we should just put people away."
That's been the case the entire season for the Silver and Black. They have the talent to conquer the big bads of the league, knocking off Denver, Houston, and OKC three times, but they've found themselves in knock-down, drag-out fights with teams like the Pelicans.
The Spurs keep playing with their food and it's getting them in trouble
It's a problem they have to correct now because, whereas they kept finding ways to win those games before, they're losing them now, and the Western Conference is too tough to start dropping games against inferior opponents. There is only a game and a half of separation between the second and sixth seeds now, putting San Antonio in danger of losing an advantage they worked hard to obtain.
Denver is going to be a feisty team, but I expect them to drop games with Nikola Jokic out. I'm sure nobody wants to hold onto the number two seed more than the Spurs do, but they haven't been playing like it.
They get a chance to turn the page on yesterday's eyesore performance quickly due to their duty to host the Los Angeles Lakers for a soiree to be featured on ESPN. I have no doubt that they'll show up to that game. The competition features Luka Doncic and LeBron James. We already have proof that SA gets juiced up for matchups with the best in the league. That's not my concern.
I'm worried about what they're going to look like when they play Utah again. They're going to have to play them two more times this month. Fortunately (I think), we don't have to worry about that right now. San Antonio's next six opponents are tougher than a well-done steak from Walmart.
After the Lakers tonight, in order, the Silver and Black get to go through the Celtics, Timberwolves, Thunder, Bucks, and Timberwolves. This ball club has performed well against the good teams in the league. They'll continue to do that. They just need to carry that same focus against lesser squads and get back to winning so Spurs Nation can get back to having fun.
