Victor Wembanyama has been a godsend for the Spurs franchise and is about to get compensated for it. Set to receive a five-year, maximum extension approaching $250+ million this offseason, rival squads will be wondering what went wrong.

Rookie extensions are capped at a fixed percentage of the salary cap, so even generational players like the Alien can’t truly be paid what they’re worth early in their careers. That's why this deal may look massive but is actually a huge bargain.

The Frenchman is lined up to break the bank and earn himself an unfathomable amount of money, yet still, it doesn't seem like enough. Vic is undoubtedly a top-five player in the NBA and is projected to win a case full of awards throughout his career. When it's all said and done, Wemby could be not only one of the best Spurs of all time but also one of the greatest, period.

Victor Wembanyama's upcoming contract is an absolute steal

Don't get me wrong, $250 mil is by no means a small number. In fact, this Brinks truck's worth of bread would place Wemby among the top six across the NBA in total contract value. But that is precisely why it is such a steal. As time goes along, more and more players are going to land on this list and inevitably earn more than the Alien.

The simple fact that the Spurs aren't having to fork over $300+ million to Victor is a massive win. Projected to take over the NBA and become one of the best three players in the league, you would expect a player like this to be the highest paid in the association. Instead, Wembanyama will make less than Jaylen Brown and Evan Mobley.

Even more hilarious, players such as Franz Wagner, Scottie Barnes, and Karl-Anthony Towns will make just $30 million less than the future Defensive Player of the Year. Wembanyama wholeheartedly deserves to be the highest-paid player in the NBA and shouldn't be in the same financial class as these borderline All-Stars. This is a big win for San Antonio.

Rival teams will have to reevaluate after seeing Wemby's contract

At the same time Victor earns his first big payday, several other players in his draft class will be seeking a similar payday. Unfortunately for the front offices of those looking to cash out, the Wembanyama contract will make any attempts to pay a similar dollar amount look idiotic.

The biggest player in this scenario is the Houston Rockets' Amen Thompson. The former fourth-overall pick has lived up to the billing. With his all-defensive play, he is worthy of a lucrative contract. However, unfortunately for the Rockets, Thompson is likely to seek one similar to Wembanyama's. And even worse, Houston may have to pay up.

A similar situation could unfold in Charlotte, as Brandon Miller will also be seeking a high-level contract. The Hornets will certainly be wary of paying him Victor Wembanyama-level money.

Without even trying, the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama will create a massive headache for front offices around the NBA. As stars request the highest amount of money possible, their contracts will be tied to the minuscule earnings of the Frenchman. As time goes on, the superstar's deal could cause a boatload of havoc across the association.
