The San Antonio Spurs find themselves just one game away from clinching their first trip to the NBA Finals in more than a decade thanks to star Victor Wembanyama. His seismic impact on the Spurs transformed them from being a bottom feeder into a contender in a matter of just three seasons.
Now, the Spurs are going toe-to-toe with the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder with Wembanyama carrying them on both sides of the floor. Especially on defense.
Although the series is currently 3-3, the Spurs have been the better team when Wembanyama has been on the floor. They have a stellar plus-18 net rating with him on the floor, while the Thunder have the edge over the Spurs when he is sitting.
The Spurs have their best chance of making the NBA Finals in years
With the Spurs and Thunder series tied after six games, one game will decide the fate of both teams. If the Thunder win, they'd be favorites to repeat as champions.
If the Spurs win, then Wembanyama will have led them to the NBA Finals in just his third season. That would be a rare feat that could go a long way to establishing him as the face of the league.
Remember, Michael Jordan didn't make his first NBA Finals until year seven, and LeBron James didn't make his first one until year four. Making the NBA Finals this season could mean Wembanyama is well on his way to greatness.
Victor Wembanyama is fueling the Spurs' unprecedented turnaround
No matter how this season ends, this year has been a massive success. Even so, San Antonio has a chance to make it to the NBA Finals, and Wembanyama is their ticket to the promised land.
In a game of this magnitude, it will ultimately come down to the play of the stars: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) and Wembanyama. Wemby has outplayed SGA thus far, but it all comes down to one game.
If Wembanyama can outduel SGA, then San Antonio's chances of stealing Game 7 go way up. Not only does Wembanyama being more aggressive help him establish his dominance, but it also makes life easier for his teammates.
Him camping out on the perimeter doesn't force the Thunder to scramble. Wemby rolling to the rim or posting up and attacking does. It collapses the defense and increases the chances that players such as Julian Champagnie or Devin Vassell have an open three.
Hopefully Wembanyama will do just that, because if he does, then the Spurs' dramatic turnaround season may be far from over.
