The Spurs aren't scared of you. It doesn't matter if you're skilled, physical, or magical; they're going to match you in every way and elevate when necessary because they can. Victor Wembanyama set the tone, clearly with revenge on his mind, after being ejected from Game 4. What happened next was even better, though. His team had his back, and they tightened the screws on the Timberwolves as a unit.
San Antonio locked up the Timberwolves yet again, winning the game 126-97. Vic was forced to miss the majority of the last contest, so he had some making up to do, and he didn't waste any time. The Alien scored 16 points in the opening quarter, and everything rolled from there. But he only scored 11 for the rest of the game because that's all that was required of him.
Superstars will always be a problem to contain, especially when they're motivated by additional forces outside of that internal "madman" drive most of them have. But what really determines whether they succeed is how awesome their teammates are. Tonight, Wemby's crew was up to the task and then some. It was a tour de force in San Antonio with a side of chips and salsa.
The Spurs' role players were incredible vs. the Timberwolves
Stephon Castle went 8/11 from the field. He didn't make a three, but he only attempted one. He refused to be lulled into ill-advised shots from deep and went into attack mode. He's the other half of Area 51, so having Vic's back is a must, and he delivered. The 2025 Rookie of the Year played with pace and force while defending his tail off. It was a tremendous performance from the sophomore.
Keldon Johnson stepped up in a major way after some lackluster performances in this series. This is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, but he looked like anything but. He gave the Timberwolves no reason to fear his drives to the basket. That changed tonight, and he also went 8/11.
Dylan Harper continued his reign of terror as well. 5/10 from the field was slight work for the alleged rookie. He's been a menace all playoffs long, and his consistent contributions have been pivotal for San Antonio's dominance. The ex-Rutgers star has all kinds of finishes around the basket, and whether he's meeting Anthony Edwards or Rudy Gobert at the rim, he's getting the bucket.
Speaking of Ant-Man, that's where everyone else comes into the picture. Devin Vassell, Carter Bryant, De'Aaron Fox, Julian Champagnie, Harper, and Castle took turns guarding, doubling, and crowding Minny's superstar. He couldn't get going because he didn't have enough space. He finished the night with only 13 attempts. The Spurs refused to let him beat them and did a great job bottling up his teammates.
We knew about San Antonio's depth entering the postseason, but they have so many young players on their roster it was hard to tell who would continue playing at a high level. Well, now we know. The answer is pretty much all of them. Even when the shots don't fall, they can lock you down, and as we all know, defense wins championships.
