He's so close.

Although San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama is having yet another incredible season, he hasn't gotten much traction in the MVP conversation. Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to be the favorite to win the award for a second straight year.

However, if Bleacher Report's bold prediction comes true, then Wembanyama could make up significant ground. In that scenario, he could possibly win the award when it's all said and done.

Bleacher Report predicts that the Spurs will end up with the best record in the NBA. That means that they would edge out the Thunder and take away SGA's best argument for winning MVP.

To his credit, he is having a historic offensive stretch, including scoring at least 20 points in 128 straight games. Then again, Wembanyama is a generational defender, and he is also having one heck of an offensive season.

Victor Wembanyama still has a chance to win MVP this season

Wembanyama leads all NBA players in net rating, with him being a shocking plus 15.1 points per 100 possessions. He is also a strong contender for the Defensive Player of the Year award and a spot on the All-NBA First Team, assuming he meets the games played requirement.

What sets him apart from recent Defensive Player of the Year winners is that he is equally impactful offensively. He's averaging a terrific 24.3 points on 62.3% true shooting.

Only six players currently meet that criteria this season, and none of them are also the NBA's best defensive player. Just saying. Thus, the Spurs finishing with the best record in the NBA would certainly bolster his MVP resume, but how likely is it?

The Spurs can bolster Victor Wembanyama's MVP case

San Antonio is currently hotter than fish grease, with them having won 19 of their last 21 games. They have been firing on all cylinders, resulting in them playing their best basketball of the season. Their schedule has also gotten significantly easier, further helping their cause.

They have the fourth-easiest remaining schedule, while OKC has the 11th toughest. With San Antonio having 13 games left, it's possible they can go 10-3 to close out the regular season.

That would put pressure on the Thunder, who would need 62 wins to avoid a tie, which the Spurs would win.

The Thunder's injuries and desire to rest players down the stretch could make this scenario possible. San Antonio may do the same, but with easier competition, it might not matter nearly as much.

If the Spurs were able to finish above the Thunder in the standings, Wembanyama's MVP odds would skyrocket. Possibly enough to deliver him the MVP award this season.
