The Spurs dominated the Trail Blazers from start to finish behind another demonstrative performance from Victor Wembanyama. It was a team effort, no doubt, but Victor Wembanyama seems to have figured out how to lead the team on both sides of the floor every night. He sat most of the fourth quarter, finishing the night with 30 points, 10 blocks, seven rebounds, and three assists.
It's Wemby's 54th career double-double and the second time he's reached 10 blocks in his young career. The last time came against the Toronto Raptors on February 12, last season. It's appropriate that the Alien put up such a stat line, considering the significance of tonight's block party. Wembanyama is the sixth player in NBA history with 30 points and 10 blocks, but that's not all.
Wembanyama's has yet to scratch the surface of his potential
The Spurs have a strong reputation for defense through the years. Tim Duncan and David Robinson are regarded as two of the best defenders in NBA history, and Wembanyama is poised to blow by them in defensive production.
There's another level that this kid can reach, and that's a scary proposition. His limitless potential makes it impossible to fully describe what his prime could look like. He's been doing things that nobody has ever seen since his rookie season, and basketball has been played in the public eye for a very long time.
It would be foolish to undersell his ability to further drop the jaws of viewers everywhere once he fully realizes his potential. The second-year Frenchman is averaging 28.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks a night in his last 15 games. Those numbers only further prove that every projection about his ability was right on the money and if anything, was undersold.
The Spurs are building out the roster to make sure he has the proper support. The Spurs' culture will ensure they put the right pieces around him because the organization understands that a star player can't win on his own. This is a team sport, and the guys around the franchise player must pull their weight to win rings.
While the Spurs aren't close enough to the top to be championship contenders, the culture is alive and well. Devin Vassell only scored 11 points, but it was on an efficient 50% from the field. Jeremy Sochan pitched in 10, Keldon Johnson added 11, Charles Bassey notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Chris Paul had nine assists, and Tre Jones dished in seven.
It was a fine example of players who are readjusting to their roles now that the full roster is available, and it led to a 114-94 victory, placing the Spurs two games over .500.
They'll be playing games every other day for the rest of the month, and hopefully, they can get a rhythm and build on their last two wins. Playoffs are still the goal, and there are a lot of games left. Good thing they have an Alien onboard.
