Fans will remember the Spurs played the Nets in Brooklyn on December 27. It's memorable because it was the lone win in a bad stretch on the schedule when they lost three out of four games. After they secured that victory, Victor Wembanyama was pictured with a Spurs fan in a jersey exchange that went viral on social media. It was just so damn cute.
Unfortunately, what should remain a fond memory for all involved has devolved into a cautionary tale that may end up ruining future experiences for young fans. The jersey Wemby exchanged with the young fan appeared on an auction site just weeks later. The reaction to this development has been strong. People are firmly against it, and they've been loud enough that it's reached Wemby himself.
One man's greed risks Wembanyama declining future fan interaction
It would likely take many instances of selfishness from fans for Vic to reach this point, but we can't take anything for granted. Wemby has been very gracious with his time and his gear, giving away items on a regular basis. But everyone has a point where they feel like enough is enough, and there's no need to put negative experiences in that basket, no matter the pace at which they stack.
This is not the first time he's the ugliness of people since he's been here, but the other times were different. His run-in with Britney Spears was weird and bigger than it needed to be. It served no purpose, it seemed, other than to stir drama for a former star who needed some spotlight for her new book.
Wembanyama has also had to file a lawsuit against a man in Texas named James T. Glodich, who was selling merchandise using his likeness. At this time, Glodich's website seems to have shut down, prompting Wemby to drop the lawsuit. That was just resolved at the end of December 2024.
The difference between those situations and this latest betrayal is how they were dressed up. The first two were obvious attempts to take advantage of Wemby's star power for monetary benefit one way or another. The other was a direct manipulation in Victor's face, using a kid as the tool to get what you want. It's dirty.
That kind of thing can jade you when you're trying to decide who is a fan and who is an actor playing a role to take advantage of your kindness. Wemby's reaction was simple, but he doesn't comment much at all on social media. A crying emoji is more than enough to understand how he feels about this. Shame on the man who did it.
