Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are in a perfect position to make it back to the NBA Finals next year. It won’t be easy, but they’re in as good a position as any team in the NBA. But the Western Conference can be deadly. And if the Denver Nuggets get involved in the Jaylen Brown sweepstakes, their pathway back to the Finals would get that much harder.
Obviously, the Boston Celtics want a hefty asking price in the Brown sweepstakes. They may even ask for Jamal Murray, should the Nuggets try to get involved. However, the Nuggets would probably want to pair Brown alongside Nikola Jokic and Murray. That trio would be a force in the West.
And that would be bad for the Spurs.
Spurs better root against a Jaylen Brown trade to Nuggets
At this point, it seems most likely that Brown will be traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. They are the team most reporters are mentioning as the most likely destination for the Celtics superstar.
The Blazers have all the draft capital in the world to make a deal happen, as they own two future Milwaukee Bucks picks, which should, in theory, land in the top 10 of their respective draft classes.
However, there were some small rumblings that the Nuggets have at least considered the idea of trading for Brown. And though it would be expensive, it wouldn’t be impossible from a financial perspective.
In theory, the Nuggets could ship out Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson, and other pieces to match Brown’s salary. Although the Celtics would probably want more than that.
Perhaps the Nuggets could use a Peyton Watson sign-and-trade to entice Boston, while also adding in a bunch of draft picks (or, at least, any draft picks they can still trade).
Denver may even have to get a third team involved so Boston wouldn’t have to take on any salary it didn’t want to. And even then, the Blazers would still probably present a better trade package.
Still, it’s in the realm of possibilities that the Nuggets could make a big-swing move for Brown. One that would put them back atop the Western Conference’s biggest powerhouses.
The Nuggets would immediately become an even bigger threat than they already are, and the Spurs would probably have to go through them, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Oklahoma City Thunder, or multiple of those teams in order to reach the NBA Finals.
The West is already stacked. Adding another superstar to a team that already has a superstar would be a brutal blow to the Spurs’ title chances.
Wembanyama should be rooting hard against a Brown trade to the Nuggets.
