Wembanyama just confirmed Castle’s ceiling is higher than anyone predicted

I think the Spurs have their third star.

The San Antonio Spurs were already playing well prior to February 1st but have been playing at an entirely new level since. That has a lot to do with guard Stephon Castle.

His play over the last two months has not only helped San Antonio go from good to great but has also raised his ceiling. We all knew that he was going to be good but not this good.

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama recently echoed that sentiment by mentioning that he was glad that he fell to the Spurs in the 2024 NBA draft.

Castle has clearly been the best player in his draft class, and the concerns surrounding his game are quickly fading away.

Stephon Castle may be the Spurs' third star

Over the last two months, he's averaging an impressive 16.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and just 2.7 turnovers per game. He's also shooting a more than respectable 38.9% from three on 3.1 3-point attempts per game.

Few expected him to be a lead playmaker, especially after he struggled with turnovers over the first 30 games of the season. During that span, he averaged 3.7 turnovers per game, which led the NBA.

Since then, he boasts a nearly three-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio and has fixed his shaky jump shot. That's a serious 180, giving how he started the season shooting 25.9% from three.

While he may still be shooting only 31.8% from three on the season, make no mistake, he has dramatically improved as a shooter.

Stephon Castle is another draft steal for San Antonio

In addition to shooting 38.9% from three since February 1st, he has shot an impressive 45.2% on mid-range jumpers for the entire season.

That's a massive development. Prior to the 2024 NBA draft, Castle's biggest knock was his lack of three-point shooting. In fact, the Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards, and Houston Rockets likely passed him over for this reason.

Their loss. For all the talk about San Antonio ending up with three top four picks in the last three drafts, no one talks about them outsmarting three other teams by selecting Castle.

He is already an all-defensive first-team-caliber defender and is an elite slasher who can also get to the free throw line at will.

If he can be an above-average 3-point shooter going forward, there's nothing standing in his way to becoming San Antonio's third star.

He's arguably been their second-best player this season and is helping propel them to what could be a 60-win year. If that doesn't tell you how special Castle is, then I don't know what will.
