The Spurs just punished the Pistons all night long. It was funny, yet at the same time sad, when you realized Detroit is just seriously, hilariously outmatched when it comes to their matchup with San Antonio. It became apparent pretty early when De'Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama were doing literally whatever they wanted on the floor.

The visitors looked helpless. That's the number one seed in the Eastern Conference, I'll remind you. Swipa was posing and staring at his hands, and the Alien was laughing as he made the Pistons guess wrong no matter what choice they made in an attempt to slow him down.
This is just one more piece of evidence that San Antonio is for real. Mitch Johnson's crew is terrific from top to bottom. They've pummeled very good opponents into 20-point deficits with relative consistency all year. It's made for a good time for Spurs fans and a bad time for everyone else.
The Spurs have a higher ceiling than every other team in the NBA
Let's start with Cade Cunningham. The ex-Oklahoma State hooper longed for his college days if it meant getting away from Stephon "Put 'em in the dungeon" Castle. After struggling to score against the reigning Rookie of the Year in their first meeting last Monday, the Pistons star had another grossly inefficient night. Even Detroit's fans recognize the problem the Spurs pose for their favorite team.

Don't let the raw numbers fool you. He may have scored 26 points, but it took him 26 shots to do it. It was a terrible, offensive night for this team, and the only reason they were as close as the score indicates was some out-of-character three-point shooting from Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart. They're both 33% shooters, yet somehow they shot 57% and 60% tonight. Go figure.
Free throws were a wash between the two ball clubs, with the Spurs and Pistons posting an identical 24/30 from the charity stripe. That's an area that the Silver and Black usually dominate. None of that helped the away team because again, they were just being outclassed in every way for the majority of the game.
Wemby and Fox are having an old-fashioned "we are just better than you" game vs Detriot rn

When both of San Antonio's stars are on offensively, there aren't many teams in the league who can hang around. Victor Wembanyama is too good, and if he and his partner-in-crime are making shots, that means the Spurs keep getting a chance to set their defense. At that point, the opposition is in hell.
The rest of the team wasn't even knocking down a bunch of threes. But Vic and Fox were. That's a problem because now you can't lay off of them, and when you over-commit to their jump shots, your defense is going to succumb to the relentless pressure this young, athletic squad will put on the paint since you're forced to leave it exposed.
Wemby put up 38 points, 16 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 assists. Fox chipped in 29 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block. It looked fairly easy for them. The most physical team in the league played on their heels all night. That's what can happen when the Spurs are on their game and it can happen to anyone.
