Not only are the Spurs headed towards their first playoff appearance in seven years, but Victor Wembanyama will also be making his postseason debut. This is one of the best players in the NBA, and he has yet to play meaningful basketball. Now, he will get that opportunity.
It's hard to know what to expect from Victor. He showed up big in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but we have never seen what he is like in an NBA best-of-7 series, so we can't confidently predict what the result will be. However, based on the Frenchman's dedication, intensity, and drive to win, I expect nothing less than profound success.
Already nearing the peak of his powers, Wemby is fully prepared to play playoff basketball. It's rare to see someone so talented make their playoff debut in this form. Typically, it takes a few years of battle scars to hit the level that Victor is at right now. With that, the Alien has the chance to etch his name into a group of legends.
Victor Wembanyama will have a historic NBA playoff debut
We have seen some all-time greats dominate in their first playoff run. The legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar leads a pack of Hall-of-Famers with 35.2 points per game in his playoff debut run. Upper-echelon players such as Wilt Chamberlain (33.2), LeBron James (30.8), and Luka Doncic (31.0) are a few of the other standouts to make the top 10 of this category.
With Victor Wembanyama averaging 24.7 points per game entering his first playoff series, he is capable of joining this historic group.
As of late, Victor has shown what he can do when he has a goal in mind. He is coming off back-to-back forty-plus-point games against the Warriors and Bulls as he tries his darndest to win MVP. Clearly, Wemby is more than capable of taking over games when he wants to, and in the playoffs, he sure as hell will want to.
Another factor in Wemby's case to average over 30 in his playoff debut run is his absurdly low minute count. The star big man is playing only 29.2 minutes per game this season and still averaging nearly 25 points. The Spurs will most certainly need him to play heavy minutes, especially as the playoffs wane on.
With increased minutes and a drive to win a championship, don't be surprised if Wembanyama breaks into the top 10 of this illustrious category. If he averages over 30 points per game, he will break the group of 10 and quickly be seen as a playoff riser.
If you have watched or listened to Victor at all this season, you will know that he is capable of this. It is a matter of when, not if, Wemby will be one of the greatest. Part of doing that is performing in the playoffs. Without a doubt in my mind, Wembanyama's playoff debut will be one we will look back on for years to come.
