Victor Wembanyama's unrivaled attribute has NBA legends stunned

NBA Twitter should have a field day with this one.

NBA legends can't seem to get enough of Victor Wembanyama at this point. After singing his praises a month and a half ago, Paul Pierce made some more glowing remarks about the Frenchman. This time, they were a bit more extreme.

"This is the best basketball player I've ever seen play," Pierce states on the No Fouls Given podcast. "He is the most complete player we've ever seen play the game. Like, we can talk about Bron, Jordan, Joker, but he is the most complete player in the history of the game."

Cue the NBA Twitter reactions. That is a massive statement about a guy who's just 22 years old, hasn't won a ring yet, and isn't even close to his prime. But while controversial, there is some truth in Pierce's thoughts about Wemby.

Victor Wembanyama's upside is the highest we've ever seen

Paul Pierce said that Victor Wembanyama is the best basketball player we've ever seen. I can't totally co-sign that, as I think it's only fair to assign that praise to someone who's done more through the course of their career. It's tough to say this about a 22-year-old in his third season compared to NBA legends who accomplished so much over a decade or longer.

I think the better way to direct the conversation is to focus on Wemby's upside and potential. The question should be, based on his skill set and the flashes we've seen, what can he accomplish? When you look at it that way, there isn't a player in the history of the game who has a higher ceiling than him.

Think about it. Victor's 7'4" with great mobility, a confident handle, a good-looking jump shot, elite defensive instincts, and a killer mentality. Might I even add that he's a solid playmaker at his size and position? That's just a blend of skills that we haven't seen before.

So no, I can't say with certainty that Wemby's the best player we've ever seen. I grew up watching LeBron, Kobe, and Stephen Curry. But if we're talking potential, there aren't any other players in the history of the game whose ceiling at 22 years old was higher than his.

Wemby's postseason numbers are proving his all-around impact

One thing we're learning about Victor this postseason is how complete a player he is. He's impacting high-stakes playoff games in so many different ways.

So when Paul Pierce makes the point about Victor being the most complete basketball player ever, you can at least see where he's coming from. Now, this isn't cemented as gospel truth, but based on what we're witnessing from him now, he has more than enough potential to snatch that title.

Let me reiterate: his blend of skills is not normal. Barring injuries, he has the potential to go down as the greatest defender ever while being one of the most standout offensive forces the game has ever seen. There are few in league history who could do both at such a high level.
