San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is no doubt already back on the court working on his game after their recent NBA Finals loss. NBA legend Kevin Garnett has even already provided some offseason advice.
Garnett has recommended he work on his core strength, which might not seem like a great piece of advice, but perhaps KG is on the right track. There is no denying that Wemby has gotten stronger since being drafted but is still prone to getting pushed off his spot.
Improving in that area would lead to better balance. That would make him harder to get knocked backwards on defense or making finishing through contact much easier on offense.
An improved Wembanyama would be the best way for the Spurs to make it back to the Finals to get sweet revenge on the New York Knicks.
Victor Wembanyama must take Kevin Garnett's advice
If Wembanyama can come back even 10% better next season, then San Antonio could be the favorites to win it all. To do that, he'll have to put all of the skills he's learned together.
He apparently has a jump hook that he has yet to show off was more aggressive attacking closeouts instead of shooting threes. Working on his core strength could help to unlock both of those skills.
Wembanyama spent more time in the post last season. Nevertheless, he would often get either double-teamed, forcing him to give up the ball, or single-covered by a good defender.
Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns come to mind. Both were extremely physical, grabbing or pushing Wembanyama.
The Spurs are one Wemby improvement away from a championship
With him adding more weight and improving his core strength, he could punish them in the paint and even when putting the ball on the floor and attacking.
Opposing teams being physical with him would be negated by his ability to maintain his position and either score or draw fouls. Therefore, Garnett is right on the money in suggesting that Wemby work on that area this offseason.
That's not to say that he hasn't already been working on core strength. In fact, the difference in his body from year one to year three has been nothing short of impressive.
Nevertheless, he'll need to continue filling out and working on his core strength to be able to withstand punishment and dish it out next season.
