I'm so glad basketball season is finally here, and Victor Wembanyama is back on the court. It only took one game for people to start calling him the best player in the world. For two days straight, media members have fawned over San Antonio's star unicorn, and it's been a pleasure to listen to. The Spurs are back, and this time, they brought the NBA's version of Tiger Woods, apparently.
I was in awe. To me, this was like Tiger (Woods) that first year in '97 just demolishing golf courses, and we're like, 'what's going on?'" - Bill Simmons
If you've read my previous articles on The Alien, you know how high on him I was coming into this season. I began talking about his MVP chances months ago, so I can't say that I'm surprised that he's playing so well. But it's still shocking to witness it with your own eyes. However, I'm going to pump the brakes on declaring he's the best player in the league out of respect for the game.
Consistency will determine Wembanyama's rank
The NBA, just like any sport, is a "what have you done for me lately?" kind of business. He can't land the best player in the world title off of one game when we've watched Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo play out of their minds for years. Interestingly enough, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the player closest to being passed by Wemby, even though he just won a title and an MVP.
The fact is that SGA hasn't played at this level as long as those other guys have. They both have multiple MVP awards to their names, and if you were to make a list of the best NBA players of all time, the Joker and the Greek Freak would be on it. Shai isn't getting that level of recognition yet on a wide enough scale.
Wembanyama is 21 years old and has a real chance to win an MVP this season. If he does that and wins Defensive Player of the Year as everyone expects, it wouldn't take much more to surpass his OKC rival.
If you want to argue the nuances between the terms "best" and "greater." I can be convinced of Vic passing these guys much sooner, though.
FS1's Nick Wright made the point perfectly when asking if Wemby is the best defensive player in the league by far, and he's averaging 25 points per game, how much more would he need to do for everyone to consider him the best player? But I'd take it a step further because 25 ppg is modest considering he averaged 24 last season.
It's far more likely that the French sensation averages closer to 30 points based on the dominance he just displayed and the ease with which he did it. If we reach the middle of the season, and he's doing that, I'll have to give him the nod as the best player in the league. Sorry to the other players. I respect the game, but not that damn much.
