Victor Wembanyama has pundits thinking Spurs could pull off shocking blockbuster

Yeah, but no. But maybe.

Victor Wembanyama is one of the ten best players in the league, and it's not up for debate. When you have a talent like that, everyone is going to be anxious to see what you can do in the playoffs. That's why every analyst and their mothers are coming up with trade scenarios for the San Antonio Spurs to accelerate their process back contention. It's understandable and not completely off base.

Wemby raced past expectations, so patience is no longer being tempered in the slightest. To that effect, Bill Simmons was on his podcast discussing the moves he thinks the Spurs should make with the trade deadline less than a month away.

"This is the number one, holy ****, I can't believe they traded for Jimmy Butler team... This is also a holy ****, they traded for Zion team." - Bill Simmons

Spurs would be taking huge risk with Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler is probably the most volatile player in the NBA today. His mood seems to change with the wind, and when he's not happy, he can turn into a tremendous distraction. That's not what a young team like the Spurs need right now. While Simmons is right about the trajectory of Wembanyama, he's wrong to even suggest Butler to San Antonio.

There are several other potential targets that should be thrown out there well before Jimmy is even considered as a possible option for the Silver and Black. It's truly unfortunate to see his reputation take such a hit because Butler was one of the most respected players in the league a few years ago.

He's always had a rep as a bit of a hothead, but it was endearing before, for whatever reason. There are horror stories about how he treated his teammates in Minnesota and Philadelphia, but fans brushed it off because he was the best player on those teams, which also had a reputation for being soft. Maybe fans thought they needed that from Jimmy Buckets.

Now that he's in Miami—a respected organization—and he can't get along with Pat Riley, the plot armor has worn off. People are tired of Butler's antics, and he's seen as a bit of a pariah at 35 years old. Not to mention all the games he's missed over the past few seasons. San Antonio doesn't need that.

Zion is a handful the Spurs should consider but be weary of

Before Wemby came along, Williamson had the biggest hype train coming out of college since LeBron James. He was the number one prospect in the country coming out of high school, and his one year at Duke solidified that hype. He was a one-man wrecking crew with his size, strength, agility, and finishing ability. But he hasn't fully realized his potential six years into his NBA career.

It's been one thing after another on the injury front for Zion, and this year has been no different. He's only played in nine games this season. He's only played in more than 60 games twice, so far, but one of those seasons was last year. That may be the hope that teams need to believe that he can turn around his injury woes.

He wouldn't be the only player in the history of the league to begin their career with a lot of injuries, only to get healthy later and have a strong career. Steph Curry is one of the most recent examples of that. Curry had recurring foot injuries for the first few years of his illustrious tenure, but once that was behind him, he turned into the pinnacle of health.

There's always a possibility that a change of scenery is what a player needs to reach his ceiling, though. New Orleans hasn't been the most well-oiled machine, but the Spurs have a stories organization known for treating their players right and fostering a positive environment for growth.

The other concern is the recent report that Zion prefers a big market city. But those are reports that the media seems to levy on every star who doesn't play in New York or LA. Williamson is under contract for three more years, so he wouldn't have much of a say in the matter, but you don't want a star player held hostage.

With that being said, the Spurs have the assets to get who they want and still have more to pivot later if need be. They should test the waters by gauging the price for Zion and speak with the former Blue Devil's agent to find out how interested he'd be in teaming up with Wembanyama. It's all a longshot, but if the Silver and Black brought Zion to this team and he stays healthy, it's a wrap for the NBA.
